Nourished: 2021 After Pentecost Sermon Seeds Series

To nourish is to provide sustenance for growth, health, well-being, and survival. Many of the lectionary texts during these weeks feature the eating of meals and provision of food/supply in miraculous ways. Throughout the biblical corpus, food imagery permeates the narrative. From the abundance of the garden at creation to the replenished abundance of the garden in Revelation and shifting levels of scarcity and provision in between, we find the people of God consumed with cultivation, harvesting, and sharing of meals for energy, connection, and enjoyment.

This Sermon Seeds series will focus on the invitation to enter into God’s hospitality and how we are formed by the Creator’s nourishment. Below you will find the weekly themes and focus scripture passages along with a couple of quotes for further reflection.

“When we eat, we experience the delight of the created order, we experience the sensory magnificence of our human bodies, we commune with one another, and, through this connection with all of creation, we commune with and delight in our Creator as well.”

— Kendall Vanderslice

“Guide me, O thou great Redeemer,

Pilgrim through this barren land;

I am weak, but thou art mighty;

Hold me with thy powerful hand:

Bread of heaven, bread of heaven

Feed me till I want no more.

Feed me till I want no more.”

–William Williams
