UCC observes Make-a-Will Month by offering free will-writing tool
This August, the United Church of Christ is observing Make-A-Will Month by providing a free will-writing tool.
This is done in partnership between the National Ministries, The Pension Boards, and FreeWill. It’s a moment to be thoughtful stewards of family, finances, and faith. Nearly two-thirds of American adults do not have a will, and this program empowers congregation members to prayerfully plan for their future and protect loved ones.
Empowerment to care for loved ones
“The Pension Boards made the initial investment in the program, and the National Ministries is providing the staffing to bring these resources across the UCC to all members,” said Andrew Warner, UCC generosity outreach officer. “It’s all about empowering people to take care of those they love with legal planning tools.”
There is no upfront cost — this has been covered by the Pension Boards.
Warner said it’s “more complicated than using Amazon, but should only take about 20 minutes, and it’s easy to save progress as you work through the online program.”
Many people use the tool as a jumping-off point and then take it to their own attorney for review. Along with a legally valid will, the program also offers creation of advance healthcare directives and durable financial powers of attorney. It can be amended as time goes on as well.
Legacy of love
There are more than 2,300 verses in the Bible that deal with stewardship, generosity, and financial management. The Bible talks more about generosity and money than any other topic, with the exception of love. Creating a will and establishing a personal legacy can be a great act of love, according to Warner.
When using the program to create a will, it offers the option to prayerfully consider including a gift to the UCC, though this is not required. Designations can be made to a church, conference, the UCC National Ministries, or particular causes.
“This will strengthen our ministries and church family for generations to come,” said Warner. “It’s an opportunity to help churches at the local level, and any other giving a person would like to do.”
