Trans Day of Visibility message from UCC’s Thompson: ‘We will continue to show up and speak up’
On March 31, pale pink and baby blue striped flags fluttered in the wind in front of homes, business and churches, recognizing and celebrating trans people of all ages.
Since 2010, the last day of March has been set aside as Trans Day of Visibility — a time to not only celebrate trans youth and adults but to raise awareness of the challenges they face and the growing need to advocate for their rights.
In a prerecorded message for Trans Day of Visibility, UCC General Minister and President the Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson shared the denomination’s support for the trans community. As she recognized the gifts of trans people of all ages, she also stated how now more than ever it is important to address the growing discrimination and violence they face in a climate where their rights are being diminished.
“Trans people are a vibrant part of our communities,” Thompson said. “We will continue to find ways to be strong advocates and supporters. We will continue to show up and speak up.”
Showing and speaking up
In the United Church of Christ, many congregations continue to show up and speak out for their trans sibling, recognizing Trans Day of Visibility with moments of prayer and calls to action on Sunday, March 30. On March 31, conferences like Southern New England Conference of the UCC even organized its ministers and member congregations to meet with Connecticut lawmakers at the state capitol in Hartford to share why trans rights are important.
