Changing our communities and the world.

About Volunteer Ministries

The Volunteer Engagement Office of the United Church of Christ National Ministries sits within the Global HOPE Team. Volunteer Ministries works with partners across the United States and internationally to match people with variety of volunteer and community-based learning opportunities. Our work aspires to support individuals and groups in the work of providing neighborly love and care to others, to learn from different people, places and cultures, and to deepen their faith and personal growth while enhancing the capacity of organizations to impact the common good. We endeavor to support the work of the church in ways that both invest in a better world for the future and build upon our long history.

Get Involved

Doing justice, seeking peace and building community are central to the identity of the United Church of Christ. Volunteer Ministries helps UCC members discover ways to engage in faith-based service. From disaster recovery, affordable housing, to social justice advocacy, our programs provide a variety of service opportunities. Volunteer Ministries welcomes and supports volunteers in many offices and ministries. We are glad to assist you with finding the right fit for your interests. Below are some opportunities to get you started.

Partners in Service

+

The Partners in Service Program places adults, ages 19 and up, with non-profit organizations who aim to hear, center and amplify voices of those on the margins. Volunteers serve in diverse settings across the United States, for one month to a year. Through service, volunteers do justice, seek peace and build community.

Service Trip Opportunities

+

The work of Volunteer Ministries has long included supporting the establishment of service trip sites among ministries, and tracking, updating and publishing an annual listing of faith-based service, immersion and/or social action opportunities for youth, intergenerational and adult groups. Most of these opportunities were interrupted during and following the Covid pandemic. As ministry sites have reopened for service trip groups, they have been added to our listing below. In 2026 we are continuing to identify, support and confirm more service trip opportunities, and to publish and promote them below.

2026 Service Trip Grant Application open for UCC-affiliated College and Seminary Groups

+

The United Church of Christ, through the Global HOPE Team’s Volunteer Ministries, offers grants to support short-term immersion and service trips for: faith-based student groups from UCC colleges, universities, and seminaries; UCC Chaplain-staffed student groups in college or seminary; and faith-based college and seminary trips coordinated by a local or wider UCC church or ministry settings. The purpose of these funds is to subsidize the cost of such trips, making it possible for students and/or groups with limited financial means to experience a faith-based immersion/service experience with a component for theological and contextual reflection. Group coordinators or staff may apply for grants to support trips being planned for any time in the 2026 calendar year. Information and application here.

Young Adult Fellowship Program

+

Volunteer Ministries programs and opportunities for young adults (ages 19 – 30) are designed to offer a combination of community engagement, experiential learning, spiritual formation and leadership development.

Highlight from My Experience

Field visits with the case manager showed me how problem-solving is a key component of social work.

What I Took Away

If I’m passionate about a cause, I can pursue it and change lives – event if it’s just one person at a time.

A Quote That Inspires Me

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.” Angela Davis
