North Carolina church voices call to Stop Funding Fossils

Members_for_Sep_of_O_S.JPGHoly Covenant United Church of Christ, a congregation in Charlotte, N.C., is illustrating the call to ‘Stop Funding Fossils’ with photos urging the separation of oil and state.

The Rev. Nancy Ellett Allison, Holy Covenant pastor, rallied four different groups Sunday to be part of the campaign — one with members of a predominately African American church which joined Holy Covenant for a discussion around issues of mass incarceration; another with a group at a symposium on anti-racism; and two other pictures of members of the UCC congregation, children and adults.

The photos promote the “Stop Funding Fossils” day of action on Nov. 14. Earth care activists and UCC communities are working to pressure worldwide governments to stop subsidies to fossil fuel companies, in a day of action leading up to the U.N. climate summit in Paris later this month.

Children_for_Sep_of_O_S.JPGSupporters of climate care are urged by the UCC environmental justice ministry to take a picture of themselves or their church members holding a protest sign, or one that suggests what they would do with the $52 billion in annual fossil fuel subsidies in the U.S., share it on social media with the #StopFundingFossils hashtag or email it to the UCC national offices.
