Back Bay Mission is a community ministry of the United Church of Christ, serving the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the wider church community through faithful witness for social justice and compassionate service to the poor and marginalized.  The mission meets the urgent needs of those suffering from poverty and its effects while building pathways to social justice.  It leads the way in delivering services creating collaborative solutions, and transforming lives through Mission immersion

Project/Focus:  Back Bay Mission’s immersion experiences are a highlight of service opportunities in the United Church of Christ.  The Mission has developed a model that places equal emphasis on service and action-reflection learning.  The Mission hosts about 850 short-term volunteers each year as well as long-term volunteers and interns.  Short-term volunteers work in the Mission’s impressive housing rehabilitation ministry, performing all aspects of home building, renovation, and remodeling.  Volunteers also have the opportunity to work in the Mission’s food pantry (the only client-choice food pantry in Mississippi), the Micah Day Center, and our partner ministries on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  Due to the nature of the housing rehabilitation projects that the Mission takes on, projects can take weeks of work by several different volunteer teams.

Educational Components: Back Bay Mission staff provide education on issues including poverty, affordable housing, and justice issues and the church’s role in realizing social change.  Education takes place during service and in reflection sessions.
