UCC help for orphaned or abused children displaced by Dorian
UCC Disaster Ministries has contributed $15,000 to support care for 25 orphaned, abused, neglected or abandoned children evacuated from Grand Bahama after Hurricane Dorian destroyed the Children’s Home there.
The children, aged 7 years and older, have been taken in by the Ranfurly Homes for Children, Nassau, Bahamas, doubling the number of children in that home.
UCC funding will help the home put in place protection policies and develop activities to help the children from Grand Bahama heal from the traumatic hurricane experience – and help the other children at Ranfurly’s to integrate the new arrivals into their community.
These changes will require adding one full-time or two part-time staff and a full-time mental health counselor specializing in addressing childhood trauma and providing appropriate psychosocial activities to deal with trauma.
The mission of Ranfurly Children’s Home is to serve as a safe, structured environment for these most vulnerable of children.
UCC Disaster Ministries’ support for this project is in collaboration with International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC).
