UCC GMP joins other faith leaders in endorsing ‘Call to Christians’ letter
The Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson, United Church of Christ General Minister and President/CEO has joined nearly 300 plus faith leaders from diverse backgrounds in endorsing a special letter that encourages Christians around the country to speak up and take action against the injustices, moral failures, and call on all Christians to ‘take risks for the sake of the Gospel and our democratic rights and freedoms.’
The letter, called ‘A Call to Christians in a Crisis of Faith and Democracy’ is spearheaded by the Center on Faith and Justice at Georgetown University and asks Christians to take a risk in these times to save democracy and protect one’s neighbor. The letter has also been endorsed by the Rev. Michael Neuroth, director of the Office of Public Policy and Advocacy, and several UCC Conference Ministers, including the Rev. Freeman Palmer of the Central Atlantic Conference, the Rev. David Long-Higgins, of the Heartland Conference, the Rev. Tanya Sadagopan, of the Minnesota Conference, and the Rev. Roberto Ochoa of the Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota Conferences.
“We call on all Christians to join us in greater acts of courage to resist the injustices and anti-democratic danger sweeping across the nation,” the statement reads in part. “In moments like this, silence is not neutrality—it is an active choice to permit harm.”
A special website was created to house the full statement, the full list of signatories, and other tools and resources for those looking for ways to participate.
