Mission partners to the U.S., ‘How can we pray for you?’ Global Ministries execs join GS LIVE to discuss a shifting global conversation
On July 13, the Rev. Shari Prestemon and Dr. Peter Makari took time out of their busy General Synod schedules to drop by the GS LIVE studios at the Kansas City convention center, where the 35th General Synod is in full swing, to share how they are going deeper into the prophetic and missionary waters of global ministries.
Prestemon, who was officially named on Monday morning, July 14, UCC’s Associate General Minister and Co-Executive of Global Ministries for the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), told stories of the human condition she witnessed firsthand in places such as the Middle East and Ukraine, where she has visited in the past year-and-a-half. She also shared the hope that exists in the relationships the UCC has forged and nurtured with its international partners over the years.
Makari, who has served Global Ministries now for 25 years, pointed out that while a world full of strife and conflict is not a new phenomenon, the past 21 months has been exceptionally challenging for those advocating for peace. He added, too, that it was encouraging to see the increasing level of engagement of local churches in the United States who have signed up for Global Ministries webinars and have invited members of the team to come and speak more about what they can do in a moment such as this.
Prestemon also encouraged U.S. congregations working for peace to remember to “use us as a resource.”
