Generative Artificial Intelligence for local churches: policy webinar June 18
Register now for an informational webinar about managing risks and policy development on generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) sponsored by the Insurance Board. It will be lead by Heather Kimmel, general counsel for the United Church of Christ on Tuesday, June 18 at 2 p.m. Eastern time.

Applications of generative artificial intelligence technologies have exploded in the past few years since ChatGPT was introduced by OpenAI, Inc. in 2022. ChatGPT and other large language models are routinely used to conduct research, draft documents and communications, and analyze data. Image generators like Midjourney and music generators like Soundful can produce complex music and graphics in response to simple prompts by an individual.

Risks and opportunities
Kimmel shared, “The risks and opportunities of using these generative artificial intelligence models are not unique for churches and religious organizations but may have special implications in these settings. This webinar provides a broad general overview on the ways genAI most likely affects faith communities, analyzes the legal risks of genAI in the church context, and provides a checklist that churches can use in establishing a policy on the use of genAI.”
Kimmel has served as the general counsel of the UCC since 2015. She regularly counsels the corporations of the National Ministries and Conferences on issues related to governance, religious liberty, intellectual property, and many other oversight processes. She maintains a blog on legal issues on the UCC website.
Those who register for the webinar will be sent a link to the presentation after it has aired live.
