New York Conference UCC Re-Opening Guidelines

(June 26th Update)

We are issuing a significant update to our Guidelines. All changes pertain to singing in church. After receiving some helpful feedback and reviewing several resources (all linked below), we are no longer recommending solo or ensemble singing in any Phase or Step within our Guidelines. We no longer believe that either masks or face shields are sufficient to reduce the aerosol spray created by the vocal cords in the process of singing. Further, we recommend no use of brass or woodwind instruments. Organ, piano, strings, percussion instruments are all fine. If your church is equipped with a video screen, you might consider pre-recorded solos or ensembles. Maximum precaution should be taken while recording such pieces. These precautions include maximum social distancing and quarantine of the space used for the recording for no less than two days after the recording.

We recommend reading:

“When and how can choirs sing again without becoming ‘super spreaders’? From the Australian Broadcasting Corporation

“When will it be safe to sing together?”

From The Atlantic

“Wind Musicians’ Risk Assessment in the Time of COVID-19”

From University of Iowa Healthcare

New York State Interim Guidance for Religious and Funeral Services

The New York Forward Plan asks employers to ask each employee on a daily basis about potential exposure to the COVID-19 virus. Here is a sample of what that daily form might look like.

Myths and Truths on Dis-infecting our Churches

We are all learners as we move forward during the COVID crisis. If you have resources that you think should be shared, please send them to us. Here are some things we are learning:

Is “fogging” an acceptable means of dis-infecting churches? Read This

What does the CDC say about acceptable means of dis-infecting? Read This

What does the EPA recommend for cleaning agents? Read This

Sam’s Club sells EPA approved Members Mark Sanitizer for hard surfaces. It is a concentrate sold by the gallon. It can be used in spray bottles. Just mix 1 and a half Tablespoons per quart of water. Spray on all hard surfaces and let dry. Do not wipe off. Watch for it to be restocked. CLICK HERE

During our Town Meetings, conference staff mentioned: Nixall , Disinfecting Wipes that specifically state “kills viruses” and Woolite Advanced.

VIRTUAL NALOXONE (NARCAN ® ) TRAINING

New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS) announces the availability of free virtual Naloxone (Narcan®) training to prepare citizens to help save a life during a suspected opioid overdose. Replacing OASAS-sponsored in-person events across the state during the COVID-19 New York State PAUSE and the New York Forward reopening process, live two-hour online trainings allow participants to interact with an instructor while learning to recognize, respond to and reverse a suspected overdose using naloxone. Participants also learn how to obtain free or very low-cost naloxone without a prescription at a local participating pharmacy using their medical prescription insurance in conjunction with the New York State Nalozone Co-Payment Assistance Program (N-CAP), or by contacting a local registered Opioid Overdose Prevention Program.

Citizens and first responders can find registration information at

Events are offered multiple times per week on a variety of schedules and are open to anyone. An internet-connected device with sound and video is required. This program is also available for private groups of 20 or more. Those interested in hosting an event can email the State Opioid Response Team at   sor@oasas.ny.gov   for additional information.

NYS OASAS naloxone training is supported under the State Opioid Response grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Many are struggling to cope emotionally with the COVID-9 outbreak. The free, national Disaster Distress Helpline is a source for 24/7 crisis counseling and emotional support.

Calls to 1-800-985-5990 and texts (text TalkWithUs to 66746) are answered by trained counselors from a network of independently operated crisis centers located across the United States.

HAND SANITIZER WARNING!!!!!

METHANOL is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers

The US Food and Drug Administration on Monday  advised consumers to avoid nine types of hand sanitizers  that may contain methanol, a toxic alcohol that can cause blindness if swallowed and systemic effects if absorbed through the skin.

One called Lavar Gel, was 81-percent methanol.

Another, CleanCare No Germ , was 28-percent methanol.

SAFE HAND SANITIZERS SHOULD INCLUDE AT LEAST 60% ISOPROPYL OR ETHANOL ALCOHOL

Conference Staff Preaching During COVID

We have adopted a new policy that conference staff will not consider any in person preaching engagements until after September 1st. This does not mean we will schedule preaching after 9/1. It means we will re-evaluate our “no in-person preaching” policy after September 1st. Staff may be asked to preach for online services.

American Red Cross Virtual Family Assistance Center in New York State

The American Red Cross across the regions of New York State have developed a program to support individuals and families who have lost family members to death as a result of COVID-19. The program will link crisis counselors with families to provide emotional and spiritual support, as well as targeted short-term case management to assist with navigating through the challenging processes which might include challenges with moving the family member’s body through the hospital, nursing home, medical examiner and funeral home systems in this time when those systems may be overwhelmed and their processes may be different than they normally are. They may also include linkage to legal resources for estate, custody, immigration or other issues related to the death.

The following links to an online intake form can be submitted by a family member, a friend who thinks someone needs help, or an agency on behalf of the family. For those without access to the needed online technology, the phone number will link the caller to an intake person who will assist with the initial steps for getting assistance.

CLICK HERE FOR SPANISH · www.redcross.org/NYSCOVIDApoyoFamiliar

Those without online capabilities may call  585-957-8187 , and a volunteer will assist them with the initial intake process. The program is expected to operate for as long as families will benefit from the service or through the month of September.
