Role Models and Children
by Deborah Dee Brayton, St. Albans Congregational Church UCC, St. Albans, New York
In everything, set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching, show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. Titus 2:7-8 (NIV)
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Mathew 5:14-16 (NIV)
A role model is a person who serves as an example by influencing others. For many children their role model is their parent or guardian. Children look up to a variety of role models, teachers, coaches, family members, peers, and yes, even you, the clergy person or youth church leader. It is very important for church leaders to be good role models for children. We are the light of the world. We have been appointed to let our light shine. Allowing others to see our light can lead others to Christ. The best testimony is not just what we say to others; it is also how we live our lives. You will be surprised how quickly children pick up what they see. If they see careless behavior, they’re going to do bad and if they see good behavior they will do good. As role models for children, we teach by example. Children may try to copy the behavior of entertainers, athletes, and characters on TV and in books.
Role models can give advice, perspective, and encouragement through life’s challenges and influence children onto the best positive path for them. It is one thing to have dreams; it is another to see someone else’s in action. Observing a role model’s dedication to their passion can ignite a similar fire in children, encouraging them to chase after their own aspirations with zeal.
Some Positive Impacts of Role Models
• Improves Academic Performance Children are more engaged and do better in school when they have mentors supporting their education.
• Encourages Better Behavior Good behavior is not born; it is made. Role models set standards for what’s acceptable, and providing standards for acceptable conduct keeps children on track.
• Developing Social Skills Role models are the perfect practice partners, helping children navigate the complex world of social interactions.
• Promotes Resilience Life is full of challenges, but role models can teach children how to be resilient. With the right coping skills, children learn that it is not about avoiding adversity but knowing how to overcome it.
• Provides Career Inspiration Ever wonder where the dreams of becoming a teacher, doctor, or firefighter come from? Exposure to a role model’s profession can plant the seeds of future career aspirations. Your work with children might inspire them to seek a career path in lay or ordained ministry.
Role models demonstrate important qualities like integrity, compassion, and determination that children can emulate. These are not fancy words; they are vital qualities that children learn best by example. As role models, we should embody these traits, showing the young folk in our care what it means to lead a life of value.
