Like It’s Your Job

[God] has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God? – Micah 6:8 (NRSV) 

Gen Z, skillful with new slang, loves to say “like it’s their job” of anyone with a particular obsession. As in, “He tells dad jokes like it’s his job.” “I hit my skin routine like it’s my job.” 

How about you? What do you do like it’s your job? 

Maybe you volunteer at a shelter, tend aging parents, or write Congress like it’s your job. Maybe you read novels, meditate or keep a garden like it’s your job. Maybe you worry about your adult children, fret about the state of the world, or make yourself sick about other things you can’t control like it’s your job. 

Or maybe you do your paying job like it’s your job—so much so that you have zero soul left for anything that isn’t your job. The demands of extractive capitalism have hit even the Church, with clergy reporting all-time highs of stress and burnout. 

Whatever we give most of our time, energy, and strength to has become our vocation—for good or ill.  

Meanwhile, grief writer Francis Weller said we have become “spiritually unemployed.” What would it look like to become spiritually re-employed? To invest ourselves wholly in soul, as if it were our job?  

What would we do with the first 20 minutes upon waking? The last half hour before sleeping? How would it reshape our sabbath time? Who would we be with, and what would we be doing?  

Micah’s injunction above invites us to fully employ ourselves by doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly alongside the One. These are nice words. How do they translate into an actual job description for what you do not just for a living, but for the biggest kind of life?

God, put me to work. Not because you demand it. Because it will bless me and my worlds.
