Video outlines resolution process for General Synod 2017
With each biennial gathering of the General Synod of the United Church of Christ, the church’s governing body has adopted resolutions on matters of social and ethical principles, from marriage equality to the use of economic leverage for peace in South Africa, Israel-Palestine, and to combat the effects of climate change.
Ahead of next summer’s event in Baltimore, scheduled for June 30 through July 4 — and in preparation for the next round of resolutions — the General Synod administration has put together a brief, explanatory video guide that outlines how to submit a resolution for consideration by Synod delegates.
The video explains some basic rules and information related to resolutions, such as who is eligible to submit a resolution, the format (the title and text) of the resolution, and what happens to a resolution after it is submitted.
“It may sound complicated, but it’s really a simple process if you pay close attention to Rule 11-3 of the General Synod Standing Rules,” said Lee Foley, UCC General Synod administrator. “There are a few important things to remember — carefully read Rule 11-3, make sure the resolution comes to the national setting with an endorsement from a qualified setting of the church, and make sure it comes to us on or before the deadline and that it follows the format provisions.”
Foley suggests emailing resolutions to his attention, followed by a paper copy delivered to the national offices in Cleveland. The deadline to submit a resolution to the Office of the General Minister and President is Jan. 2, 2017. Any resolution received after this deadline will be returned without comment.
