Just days after the United States Supreme Court returned Proposition 8 to the state of California, and minutes after the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals lifted the hold on same-sex weddings, a United Church of Christ pastor and his partner decided to “step out in faith” and legally tie the knot in front of God and everybody at the denomination’s biennial General Synod in Long Beach.

They set a bold goal: 3,000 hand-knitted, crocheted, or woven scarves, bright with rainbow color, for delegates and visitors to General Synod 2013 to wear, declare, and pass along. They received enough to go over nine miles, laid end to end: 10,000 scarves to splash a message of inclusion, if not over the sky, over the shoulders and over the hearts of everyone willing to make a simple pledge: to take action against bullying.

Just minutes after the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals lifted its stay on same-gender marriages in California on Friday, hundreds braved a blistering sun outside the Long Beach Convention Center to cheer the justice leadership of the United Church of Christ and the validation of General Synod 2005's vote to affirm marriage equality.

Responding to the growing need for more affordable housing for seniors, low-income families and people with disabilities, the Council for Health and Human Ministries is asking that all settings of United Church of Christ, in an act of hospitality, call on Congress in the immediate future to resume funding those housing programs so vulnerable people and families aren’t left without a home.
