UCC resolution affirms: affordable housing is an act of hospitality July 2, 2013
Calling the “creation and sustaining of quality affordable housing an act of hospitality,” the General Synod of the United Church of Christ today (Tuesday) called upon its congregations and national setting to advocate for funding of federal housing programs, specifically HUD Section 202 and Section 811.

UCC delegates and visitors to General Synod may fly thousands of miles, and they may find themselves in a setting where the business occurs in a language they do not understand. They remain, however, in their own country and in their own church, in contrast to representatives from overseas partners. They travel even farther to a more foreign place, bearing witness to the power of shared ministry over the decades and over the seas.

“A meditation — that’s what it says by my name, but I think you’ve been tricked,” said Pastor Julian DeShazier, preaching to delegates and visitors of General Synod 2013 after a long day of work. “Because I’m not only Pastor Julian, I’m also J. Kwest, and so, when the music comes on, some of you will be trying to meditate.

By an overwhelming majority, delegates to General Synod 2013 approved the amended resolution, “Resisting Actions Seeking to Undermine the Status of Women in Society.” Responding to a wide range of legislative initiatives threatening women’s free access to health care, equal pay, and reproductive choice, the measure calls upon the bodies of the United Church of Christ to “publicly address and challenge policies, ideologies, and theologies that promote the inferiority and subjugation of women.”
