One challenge to UCC churches in this season of Advent is to find ways to welcome Syrian refugees. Embracing these displaced people through education, fundraising and advocacy is the focus of the denomination’s December ‘Our Still Speaking Voice’ initiative.

‘Repent and Reset’
The Rev. Shawnthea Monroe, senior minister of Plymouth Church UCC, Shaker Heights, Ohio, is preaching on ‘Day1.’. Her second Sunday of Advent sermon is drawn from Isaiah 11 and Matthew 3, where John the Baptist appears in the wilderness. “He turns up every year at this time, like a relative you’ve been avoiding.
