Home security systems are very commonplace today but before 1960, the idea of a home surveillance device was considered to be pure science fiction. It took the inventive mind of a woman in Jamaica, Queens New York to turn the unthinkable into reality. In 1966, Marie Van Britton Brown came up with the idea for a closed circuit television security system - the forerunner to the modern home security system. Brown's system had a set of four peep holes and a camera that could slide up and down to look out each one. Anything the camera picked up would appear on a monitor. Her invention had another feature that was unique at that time; the security device came with a remote control you could use to unlock the door.
