Living Psalm 8 Litany – New Years Day

Living Psalms Book
Psalms in the form of words and art, reborn in the specific contexts of our world, privileging the voices of historically marginalized communities and those acting in solidarity with them.

Living Psalm 8: Litany for New Year’s Day
(Invite a variety of people from the congregation to pray/lead each petition)

Leader:  Please join together in singing-

How Great Thou Art    (verse 1 and refrain)   Tune: O STORE GUD

https://hymnary.org/text/o_lord_my_god_when_i_in_awesome_wonder

Leader: Our response is ” And crowned them with glory and honor.”

You have made your people- ALL OF YOUR PEOPLE– a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made immigrants a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made lesbians, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and straight people
a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made the poor a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made the differently abled a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made day laborers a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made Muslims, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Original religions
and Native religious believers, atheists and
agnostics a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made all activists and administrators a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made indigenous people a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made the educated and the undereducated a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made those who are married, divorced, single or remarried a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

You have made republicans and democrats, liberals, conservatives and independents
a little less than a god
And crowned them with glory and honor

We invite you to add your voices and petitions:

And crowned them with glory and honor

Leader:As we start
we lift up by name,
place in our hearts and
proclaim for all to hear
all the creatures you have made in your image as we sing:

How Great Thou Art(verse 1 and refrain)Tune: O STORE GUD

Amen!!!!

Living Psalm 8, A Litany for the New Year, was written by Mary Christine O’Connor-Thomsen, St Peter’s Roman Catholic Parish, Manhasset, NY.

Living Psalms Book is created by UCC Witness & Worship Artists’ Group, a Network of UCC connected artists, activists and ministers bridging the worship and liturgy of the local church with witness and action in the community.  Maren Tirabassi, editor.

Logo is detail from Living Psalm 80 by Sophia Beardemphl, Redwoods, CA. Recovering from significant bullying, Sophia, age nine, read Psalm 80 and  thought of brokenness that needs mending. She drew this broken and mended bowl.
