Postcards for the Planet: Engaging Environmental Voters This Election Season
During this election season, the Green Christians at the Coral Gables United Church of Christ partnered with the Environmental Voter Project (EVP) for several postcarding campaigns. EVP is a national nonprofit focused on turning low-propensity environmentalists into consistent voters. Through data analytics and survey data, they have identified over 8 million individuals nationwide who care about climate and environmental issues but did not vote in the last presidential election.
As part of a larger EVP postcard campaign, our Green Christians’ volunteers wrote over 500 postcards to non-voting environmentalists in Florida, Nevada, Virginia, and North Carolina, utilizing proven messaging to encourage voter turnout. While EVP does not endorse specific candidates, their goal is to help elect leaders who prioritize the protection of God’s creation—our natural environment and all living beings.
The Green Christians also enjoyed the experience of volunteering together. After our service, we gathered in Fellowship Hall for coffee while writing the postcards.
Here in Coral Gables, Florida, we are already witnessing the impacts of climate change, including stronger hurricanes, extreme heat, and flooding due to sea-level rise. Fortunately, we were spared the worst impacts of the recent hurricanes Helene and Milton, which devastated parts of the western Florida coastline and communities. The Green Christians aim to mobilize enough climate and environmental voters to compel politicians to address our climate priorities.
