Faith in Action: National Ministries staff roll up their sleeves for service projects in Northeast Ohio
Twice a year, the staff of the National Ministries of the United Church of Christ gather in the denominational headquarters in Cleveland for several days of professional development, team and ministry meetings, fellowship and service. This intentional block of time is referred to as ‘Home Days,’ and in an ‘off-General Synod year,’ it’s an opportunity for staff to give back to the very community the National Ministries is engrained in.
The Service in the Community Day, held on Tuesday, June 30, dispersed 117 staff members to sites across Northeast Ohio, including the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Brookdale Orchard, Womensafe Domestic Violence Shelter, City Mission, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter, and more. UCC staff assisted with various projects including serving meals to those experiencing homelessness, labeling beds, sorting and packing boxes of food, caring for and walking dogs, and helping clean and organize common area program spaces.
“The National Ministries is committed to volunteer service in policy and in deed, and it was heartwarming to have our full staff gathered in Cleveland to volunteer and give of their time and love to our community,” said Alisa Lewis, the UCC’s Chief Human Resources Officer. “This small act of kindness helps effect change in our community and doing so is in alignment with our Purpose Statement which calls us to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and our neighbor as ourselves.”
