Another deadly earthquake hits Mexico as Hurricane Maria rakes Caribbean
In Mexico, more than 200 people are already confirmed dead as the result of a powerful 7.1 earthquake that hit on Sept. 19, the 32nd anniversary of the largest quake to ever hit Mexico City. It’s Mexico’s second deadly earthquake in 11 days; the first killed dozens.
At the same time, Hurricane Maria is raking the Caribbean, pummeling Puerto Rico after killing seven people and causing great destruction in Dominica. Reported to be next in Maria’s crosshairs: the British and US Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, the southeastern Bahamas and the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano to Puerto Plata.
UCC Disaster Ministries asks your prayers during these terrifying hours of search and rescue in Mexico, and full-on hurricane and aftermath in the Caribbean. We are reaching out to Global Ministries, Church World Service and other ecumenical partners for any word on how we can help.
Meanwhile, contributions to the UCC International Emergency Relief Fund are always welcome.
