Global H.O.P.E. launches new monitoring center to track disasters, and share updates on world events

To better help the wider church community track and highlight disasters, humanitarian developments, public health concerns and other activities, the Global H.O.P.E. (Humanitarian, Opportunities, Partnerships, and Empowerment) team at the National Ministries of the United Church of Christ has launched a new webpage that will better capture various disasters the team is actively helping and tracking in real time. 

The Global H.O.P.E. Monitoring Center highlights humanitarian developments, disasters, migration events, public health concerns, and other situations affecting communities around the world. Working together with Global Ministries, and it’s international partners, the Global H.O.P.E. team continues to monitor world events, and share updates, resources, and opportunities for wider church engagement when appropriate.

“It is no secret that the frequency and severity of major humanitarian disasters are both increasing,” said Andrew Long-Higgins, minister and team lead for Global H.O.P.E. “As the wider church collectively responds to this reality, it is our team’s hope that this page will serve as a hub where timely updates on the breadth of how the UCC is responding can be shared.”

According to a report from the World Meteorological Organization, water-related disasters have increased significantly over the last 50 years, but causing fewer deaths. Of the top 10 disasters, the hazards that led to the largest human losses during the period have been droughts (650,000 deaths), storms (577,232 deaths), floods (58,700 deaths) and extreme temperature (55,736 deaths), according to the report.
