Held Beyond Measuring
May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it. – 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 (NABRE)
For a long time, I heard the word “holy” and imagined a report card:
Keep your thoughts clean. Your doubts quiet. Your body under control. Try harder. Do better.
Somewhere along the way, faith became a grading system, and I was always convinced I was one missed assignment away from failing.
But Paul’s blessing to the Thessalonians sounds less like an evaluation and more like a benediction these days. The God of peace doesn’t separate us into categories of worthy and unworthy. Instead, God gathers us up—spirit, soul, and body—and blesses the whole complicated, beautiful package.
Our lives are not pass/fail tests. They are sacred works in progress, shaped by a faithful God who refuses to give up on us. When shame tells you that you’re falling short, remember this: God isn’t standing over you with a red pen.
God is beside you, committed to your becoming.
Prayer
God of peace, free me from the belief that Your love must be earned. Gather every part of who I am—spirit, soul, and body—and remind me that Your faithfulness is greater than my striving. Amen.
