World Council of Reformed Churches addresses global militarization: ‘Our allegiance is to God’s kin-dom’
As the political temperature of the world heats up, Christians seek guidance from their denominations and leading global religions organizations on how to respond in ways that reflect the compassion and justice of Christ.
On Jan. 20, the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) released its official letter addressing both rising global militarization and violations of international law. The letter is co-authored by WCRC President the Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson, and Philip Vinod Peacock, WCRC’s General Secretary.
Thompson, General Minister and President/CEO of the United Church of Christ, was elected WCRC President at the 27th General Council which was held in Thailand last October.
The pastoral message urges WCRC’s members, which represent 230 denominations in 109 countries, to discern God’s call together in an ever-changing world through continued faithful witness and prayer.
“We are one family — members of one body — called to serve with loyalty not to any nation, but to the Lord and to one another,” wrote Thomspon and Peacock. “Let us renew our calling to walk in communion and justice, remembering that although we are divided by nationality and ethnicity, our deepest allegiance is to the kin-dom of God, and to loving our neighbors as ourselves,” they stated.
