Living Psalm 40

Living Psalms Book
Psalms in the form of words and art, reborn in the specific contexts of our world, privileging the voices of historically marginalized communities and those acting in solidarity with them.
Psalm 40
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
Reimaged by The Reverend Justo González II
God listens and responds but we must be patient. God’s work isn’t instant mash potatoes. He saw me and heard the sincerity of my soul. He understood every tear I shed. Our loving God picked me up from the slimy pit of my life and didn’t care that I was dirty, the mud of my life clearly on display. The nonsense of my “I’m fine” responses The Holy One called out, naming us by our own names and making sure we stand on solid ground.
A cool new song, I heard. I was still and a hymn of praise came over me. I soak it in as if I haven’t had water in a long time. Blessed are you siblings of God who trust beyond a shadow of a doubt, who don’t waste their time with the proud or those who embrace false goods.
Many keep wondering for God you do the things you plan for us even when human doubt creeps in. We cling to your assurance of grace and pardon. No one can compare with; your empathy, You love us in spite of ourselves especially when we don’t feel loveable. If I shared all your deeds, there would be too many to declare. You do not seek sacrifice or offering. Rather, you invite us to open our ears and acknowledge that it is us you need, not offerings. Here I am. I come.
God. give me the grace to do your will, write your law within my heart. Let every person alone and also the great assembly proclaim your life transforming ways. I will not seal my lips, oh great I am who I am. I stand firm on the solid soil where you place me. I boldly share my heart where your righteousness resides. I proclaim this day and everyday your faithfulness to the great assembly. Do not withhold your loving kindness, grace, compassion, and mercy from me, Sovereign One. May your love and faithfulness always protect me and all of God’s children.
