Susan Cartmell (Elected Assistant Moderator) has served as a local pastor in the UCC for over 40 years, serving as a settled pastor in Winchester, Needham and Harwich Port, Massachusetts and as an interim pastor in Appleton Wisconsin. The first woman to serve as a senior minister in a large steeple church, in 1997, Susan is passionate about preaching and church growth. In her first book, UnCommon Preaching, she advocates for using Biblical themes, as an alternative to the Lectionary. Her second book was written with her wife, Rev. Peggy O’Connor. Entitled The Perpetual Pivot: Ministry in the Pandemic and Beyond, it recounts stories of faith leaders who became front line workers during COVID 19.
A graduate of Mount Holyoke College (BA), Harvard Divinity School (MDIV) and Andover Newton Theological School (DMIN). Susan serves as pastor of South Church in Amherst, MA.
