Shari Prestemon elected to serve full term as Associate General Minister, Co-Executive of Global Ministries
The Rev. Shari Prestemon was elected the Associate General Minister, Co-Executive of Global Ministries by delegates to General Synod 35 on Monday, July 14 after serving in that capacity as the acting AGM for 18 months.
There was an unmistakable energy in the room, even in the early hours of the morning. Delegates had just begun to settle into their seats, but already a low hum of anticipation stirred among them. On Friday morning, the gathered body stood at the threshold of a decision — one rooted in discernment, trust, and the shared call of the Spirit.

Prestemon spoke to the General Synod crowd two days earlier when she delivered her nomination remarks on Friday evening. That momentum carried over the next 48 hours. Needing 60 percent of the votes to confirm her election, Prestemon received 642 delegates voting in affirmation of her nomination, 20 in opposition, and 7 abstaining.
When the final tally was shared, the room erupted. Applause echoed across the space, building into a full standing ovation. It was an emotional and affirming response, one that recognized not only Prestemon’s leadership but also the movement of the Spirit within the gathered body.
As the applause gently settled, Prestemon stepped to the microphone and offered words both heartfelt and humble: “Thank you. Thank you for the trust.”
Later, reflecting on the moment, she added: “I was unable to sort out all of my feelings, but I went back to the mantra I’ve been using all week. I am feeling joy, amazement, and gratitude. Mostly, I feel gratitude.”

Prestemon took on the acting role beginning in January 2024, having been called by the UCC Board of Directors, and UCC General Minister and President/CEO, Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson after her election to the top officer role in July 2023 at General Synod 34. Before joining the National Ministries, Prestemon served 10 years as the Conference Minister for the Minnesota Conference, and also served as executive director at Back Bay Mission, and as a local church pastor.
The election of Prestemon marks a significant chapter in the life of the denomination. With a deep well of experience, a heart rooted in justice, and a vision attuned to the needs of the wider Church, she steps into this role with the full and prayerful backing of the people.
