Beyond back-to-school backpacks: Churches get creative in meeting students’ unmet needs

A new school year is underway, and many students are arriving to class with backpacks that have been blessed and overflowing with supplies that have been generously donated.

But two congregations have gone beyond school backpacks, finding creative ways to meet the unmet needs of students in their communities.

UCC News talks with St. John’s United Church of Christ in Brighton, Illinois, to learn how a school supply drive turned into a fun community event which not only provided for children, but helped raised the church’s visibility among its neighbors.

While in Homer, New York, Homer Congregational UCC, shares how the most important back-to-school item is not always a pencil or notebook.
