Sacred Solidarity with Honor the Earth
Solidarity with those facing injustice is one of the most important ways people of faith can put love into action and serve as vessels for the living Spirit among us. For the next year, the UCC’s Council for Climate Justice has decided to intentionally devote focus and energy to supporting the work of Honor the Earth, an Indigenous organization led by Winona LaDuke that is currently engaged in a struggle against the Line 3 pipeline. Here are five actions that you and your congregation can take in solidarity with Honor the Earth in the struggle against the Line 3 pipeline:
1) Show up! If you are able, travel to the frontlines of resistance in Minnesota. Support actions and events closer to home.
2) Host an event! Have a house party or a church party to learn about the Line 3 struggle by watching a video of Winona LaDuke. Connect it to an action like petitioning the Biden administration to bring an end to Line. Encourage others to replicate the event.
3) Form a book group! Read Winona LaDuke’s book ”To be a Water Protector.” Then, turn your book group into an action group.
4) Champion the rights of nature! Connect the the work of Honor the Earth in advocating for the rights of nature to the UCC’s recent resolution in support of the rights of nature.
5) Spread the word! Whether it is through social media or church newsletters, share with others the work of Honor the Earth. Follow Honor the Earth on Twitter, Facebook, etc.
