Global Food Crisis Fact Sheet
Although media attention has turned away from the escalating global food crisis, by no means has the crisis lessened. Millions and millions of impoverished people throughout the world are seriously in jeopardy and the threat is growing. In the last six months alone, prices of such basic food staples as corn, rice and wheat have increased more than 50%. For the more than one billion people already living on the UN minimum survival wage of U.S. $1 a day, this is devastating. One Great Hour of Sharing continues to work on initiative that address food security throughout the world.
OGHS Contest Winners
The "What Do You See?" Contest published in the most recent copy of the OGHS Mission Report, received many responses to describe and interpret the new OGHS logo. Below are two of the entries that closely represent the mission and spirit of the Offering. Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest.
(I see)...lots of interesting images form as I continue to look at it. The first thing I see is an apple, symbolizing the food that OGHS donates to the hungry of the world. The colors surrounding the white apple make me think of our Earth, the land and sea that we must care for. The two people that grow from the colored background are reaching toward each other, made themselves of the Earth's elements, and working together to create the food that sustains us all. These people don't look very comfortable--their work is not easy, but it is important. And it is impossible for each individual to do this work by themselves.
Thanks for the new thought-provoking image,

At first look, the white parts of the logo appear to be "fruits of the vine" spanning the globe. On further examination, one sees two figures, bending to touch each other around the earth.
My mission/spirit interpretation:
"Person to person, reaching around the world to share God's gifts."

The Tents of Hope project is a one-year campaign in which people respond as communities to the crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Tents are designed and become a unique work of art and focal points within communities to raise awareness on the current situation for the people of Sudan. This is but one way that the United Church of Christ is responding. Support for this initiative comes from One Great Hour of Sharing. To find out how the UCC is responding responsibly, click here.
