Ask The Question is our site for members of the church thinking about lay or ordained vocation. It includes resources on prayer, study and the steps leading to ordination in the UCC.
These fifteen graduate schools of theology play an important role in the preparation of pastoral leaders for the United Church of Christ. The seven seminaries of the United Church of Christ have been recognized by the General Synod for their special commitment to the UCC. The eight "historically related seminaries" (most of which are full members of the Council for Higher Education) continue to serve the church in ecumenical settings. Read more about these seminaries.

Andover-Newton Theological School

Andover-Newton Theological School, founded in 1807, is the US’s oldest graduate school of theology. ANTS is a pioneer in Clinical Practical Education and Field Education. Focused study areas include Faith, Health, and Spirituality; Global Cross-Cultural, and Interfaith Ministries; Theology, Ministry, and Public Life; and Worship, Theology and the Arts. Located seven miles from Boston, ANTS offers classes through Boston Theological Institute and Hebrew College. It co-sponsors with the Boston Theological Institute the Center for Interreligious and Communal Leadership Education (CIRCLE) which explores the role of interfaith engagement in religious education and leadership.
Bangor Theological Seminary
A long and meaningful chapter in the history of Bangor Theological Seminary closed with its final Commencement Service on June 22, 2013, even as a new chapter is being written. Though BTS will no longer offer graduate degrees, our 199 year legacy of providing exceptional theological education and formation of persons responding to a call to ministry will be preserved through the mission of our spiritual successor, The BTS Center.

Chicago Theological Seminary, founded in 1855, is the oldest institution of higher learning in Chicago and was one of the first seminaries to establish a professional doctorate in ministry. CTS is committed to bringing faith and practice to real communities of faith. CTS is associated with the Association of Chicago Theological Schools of twelve schools. It sponsors the Center for the Study of Korean Christianity, the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) Religious Studies Center and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Spirituality and Wellness.
Eden Theological Seminary

Eden Theological Seminary, founded in 1850, offers four degree programs including the Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies and the Doctor of Ministry. Eden offers a number of continuing and lay ministry opportunities. One program, LIFE (Lay Institute of Faith Exploration), invites lay men and women to study scripture and explore Christian faith and life in a retreat setting and is sponsored jointly by the Missouri Mid-South Conference, the Illinois South Conference and Eden Theological Seminary (all United Church of Christ). Eden has a commitment to social justice, global immersions and contextual education.

Lancaster Theological Seminary, founded in 1825, offers programs that integrate intellectual, spiritual, social, and vocational learning. In 1964, Lancaster became the first U.S. seminary to require a cross-cultural experience for Master of Divinity students. Committed to the formation of leaders for congregations and other vocations serving church and society, the campus is home to an engaged community of students and faculty from many Christian traditions and backgrounds. Lancaster offers Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Religion, and Doctor of Ministry degrees. In collaboration with Lancaster General Hospital, a Master of Divinity degree specialization in Chaplaincy is available, as is a specialization in Spiritual Direction in conjunction with Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, Washington, DC. Lancaster Seminary also offers certificate programs in lay leadership and youth and young adult ministry. Continuing education for clergy and lay leaders and the Leadership Now program for youth provide opportunities for lifelong learning.

Pacific School of Religion, founded in 1866, educates leaders for ministries of justice and compassion in historic and emerging faith communities. A member of the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) consortium in the San Francisco Bay Area, PSR is home to the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry (CLGS), the Badè Museum of Biblical Archaeology, the Disciples Seminary Foundation, the Swedenborgian House of Studies and the Institute for Leadership Development and Study of Pacific and Asian North American Religion (PANA). PSR has been on the cutting edge of emerging movements for change in the Christian tradition, representing an early voice for the equality of women, resisting racial prejudice and war, and advocating for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and the economically disadvantaged.

United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, established in 1960 through a merger of Mission House (the German Reformed school of the prophets founded in 1862 in Wisconsin) and Yankton School of Theology (founded in 1869 by the German Congregational Churches and settled in South Dakota), is the first mainline Protestant seminary with an ecumenical charter. United is home to the Academy for Vital Christianity (in partnership with the Minnesota Conference, UCC, and United Methodist Church) which offers a variety of classes designed for those seeking a deeper understanding of the Christian tradition; the Institute for the Support of Pastoral Ministries which offers consultation opportunities for practicing clergy in pastoral care and counseling; a Master of Arts in Religious Leadership degree; and a Certificate in Leadership Toward Racial Justice.

Hartford Seminary, whose roots go back to 1833, supports and encourages faithful living in a multi-faith environment. Hartford Seminary offers Doctor of Ministry and Master of Arts degrees. It sponsors a number of certificate programs: the Black Ministries Program, Programa de Ministerios Hispanos, and the Women’s Leadership Institute. Hartford Seminary is home to the Hartford Institute for Religion Research and the Duncan Black Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. It also offers an extensive array of continuing education events and opportunities.

Howard University School of Divinity

Howard University School of Divinity (HUSD) was founded in 1869-1870 and is one of the twelve schools of Howard University, a historically black university. HUSD is the only African American theological school connected to a comprehensive category 1 research institution. A multiracial and diverse theological school, HUSD grounds it curriculum in the vital circumstances and urgencies of minority communities.

Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) is an ecumenical, interracial, international center for professional graduate theological education. It is composed of six historically black seminaries and welcomes students from many denominations. ITC seeks to provide opportunities for students to integrate liberation, wholeness, justice, reconciliation and love. It offers the Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Christian Education, Master of Arts in Church Music along with Doctor of Ministry degrees.

Vanderbilt University Divinity School

Vanderbilt University Divinity School began in 1875, following the 1873 founding of the University. The Divinity School is the only university-based interdenominational institution in the South and one of only four in the nation. Vanderbilt Divinity School seeks to prepare women and men to be representatives of faithful communities, to provide leadership in the church and the world, and to work for a more just and humane society.

Yale University Divinity School (YDS), established as Yale College in 1701 to train Christian ministers, is an ecumenical, university-based school which offers joint degrees in Sacred Music, Environmental Studies (Forestry), Non-Profit Management (School of Management), International Studies, Social Work, Law and Medicine. The Institute of Sacred Music was founded in 1973 and is affiliated with both the School of Music and the Divinity School.
