Boston-North Backyard Mission, a ministry of Second Congregational Church of Boxford, UCC, welcomes groups to a variety of urban and suburban service experiences in and around northern Massachusetts. Uniquely situated in a picturesque location with an outdoor lakeside worship space, our church serves as a wonderful retreat after serving the urban poor in nearby city neighborhoods or aiding local suburban service groups.
Projects/Focus: Participants will experience a variety of service opportunities during their week. You will serve food to insecure persons in the city of Lawrence, the poorest city in Massachusetts, at a restaurant-style soup kitchen. You may serve organizations that provide necessities to vulnerable children, or offer therapeutic riding for those with disabilities, or grow a sustainable food system. You will explore a variety of ways to serve others and learn what inspires you.
Time: Late June-August
Group Size: Maximum 25 participants per week.
Minimum Age: Youth must be age 14 by the start of the trip.
Adult to Youth Ratio: Two adult minimum with a minimum 1-6 youth to adult ratio.
Accommodations:Your group will be housed in our Parish Hall which is in the rear of the main church building, The Parish Hall has a large building fan that keeps the space comfortable. Sleeping pads will be provided for all participants. Outdoor “camp” showers are available on site. Users will want to bring a bathing suit or other suitable clothing to wear while showering, A full kitchen is attached to the
Parish Hall and groups will have access to all utensils and cookware. Groups must provide their own food, ingredients, and drinks. Paper products will be provided.
Cost: The cost is $200.00 per person for the week. Groups staying must provide proof of insurance. person per week.
