| Celebrating 50 Years Together
The United Church of Christ
and Church World Service
50 years of faithful service together
"We celebrate with thanksgiving the faithful
participation of the United Church of Christ and
its members in the life of Church World Service."
The Rev. John L. McCullough
Executive Director and CEO
Church World Service
Since its formation in 1957, the United Church of Christ has worked with Church World Service (founded in 1946) to accompllish more together than it could alone, joining hearts and resources to create a tradition of help and a legacy of hope.
When disaster strikes, Church World Service is the primary agency through which the UCC gives support for rellief and recovery efforts. This assistance may take the form of winterized family tents for Pakistani earthquake surviviors, food packages and tankers full of water for displaced people in violence-torn Darfur, Sudan, or long-term recovery assistance for families affected by hurricanes, tornatos, or flooding across the U.S.
- The UCC and CWS are empowering grassroots development with neighbors around the world.
- The UCC and CWS are one in response to, and advocacy about, the ongoing daily disaster of grinding poverty.
- CWS supported the UCC in thr production of the documentary "Troubled Waters," highlighting the vulnerability of 1.2 billion people worldwide due to the lack of adequate water and sanitation.
- CWS and the UCC work together for people-centered policies. UCC members play an important role in CWS's web-based Speak Out advocacy ministry, making their views known to Congress on issues affecting people in need.

For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.
Theme: More than we can imagine
Through One Great Hour of Sharing, lives are literally changed daily. Your support provides clean water, food, medicines, shelter, healthcare, education and so much more. In 2018, the OGHS offering was just under $2 million. An additional $1.5 million was given to the United Church of Christ Disaster Ministries in support of specific disaster relief efforts.
What is One Great Hour of Sharing®?
One Great Hour of Sharing, as part of Our Churches Wider Mission, is the special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that carries God’s message of love and hope to people in crisis. The UCC works with international partners to provide sources of clean water, food, education and health care, small business micro-credit, advocacy and resettlement for refugees and displaced persons, and emergency relief and rehabilitation. OGHS also supports domestic and international ministries for disaster preparedness and response.
Who participates in One Great Hour of Sharing?
Several Christian denominations - American Baptist Church, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Church of the Brethren, the United Church of Christ, and Church World Service work together to develop common promotional materials thereby sharing ideas, costs, and a commitment to faithful service. Each denomination receives and manages its respective OGHS offering.
How is the United Church of Christ's offering used?
60 percent of the UCC's offering supports international development initiatives, including annual support for missionaries. Currently, there are 2 OGHS supported missionaries and 1 Global Mission Intern working in disaster relief, health care, education, sustainable agricultural development, and refugee support. The offering also funds disaster preparedness and response, and disaster-related volunteer initiatives in the U.S.
Where and how are OGHS funds shared?
The United Church of Christ responds to humanitarian and development needs in the world. Specifically, we support sustainable development and refugee needs internationally and provide disaster relief and immigration assistance in the United States.
The United Church of Christ responds as a member of organizations such as Church World Service and the ACT Alliance. We also support the direct mission efforts of churches and church-based organizations that the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) have direct partnerships with through Global Ministries. Nearly one-fifth of the UCC's OGHS offering is shared through Church World Service to support refugee, and disaster programs worldwide.
How many dollars are given to the UCC's OGHS offering?
In 2018, the OGHS offering received just under $2 million. Nearly sixty-five percent of UCC congregations participate annually.
What percentage of OGHS donations are used directly for the mission?
On average, of every dollar given to One Great Hour of Sharing, 95 cents is used directly for mission programming; and 5 cents for interpretation materials. The associated administrative costs are paid by gifts to Our Church's Wider Mission National Basic Support.
How are decisions made to fund the various projects?
Most of the expenditures are put into the budget to support long-term sustainable development. All funding is reviewed and monitored by a leadership committee that also reviews grant requests for long-term disaster rehabilitation initiatives.
How can I contribute to One Great Hour of Sharing?
The OGHS special mission offering is received through local UCC congregations and all UCC members are encouraged to participate in this way. Local churches should forward their gifts to their conference office and all gifts are then forwarded to the United Church of Christ, Financial Services 6th Floor, 700 Prospect Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44115-1100.

Build sustainable communities. OGHS supports self-help programs in more than 80 nations to build sustainable communities that enable people and communities to stand against and rise above hunger, disease, illiteracy, and other forces of injustice that deny and destroy dignity.
Respond to disaster. OGHS provides emergency and long-term assistance to people in the aftermath of hurricanes, tornados, storms, floods, tidal waves, fires, explosions, technological disasters, civil strife, war, or other natural or human-caused events. On average, OGHS responds to a disaster once every 2.5 days.
- Minister to refugees. OGHS responds with advocacy and help, hope and hospitality for people who have been uprooted from their home of origin. More than 30 million of the world's people are uprooted at any given time.
In cooperation with Global Ministries, Church World Service, Action by Churches Together, Interchurch Medical Assistance, Foods Resource Bank, Oikocredit, Freedom from Hunger and hundreds of local partners around the world, One Great Hour of Sharing is part of a remarkable network of service and caring that is efficient, effective and faithful. Administrative costs are typically less than eight percent annually.
The United Church of Christ unites with Christians in eight other Protestant denominations and Church World Service in One Great Hour of Sharing, thus multiplying the effectiveness and extent of our witness many times over.
The partnership we share with nearly 6,000 United Church of Christ congregations across the United States and Puerto Rico is where this remarkable miracle connecting UCC members to the world truly begins.
