Using our General Synod pronouncements as the basis for these reflections, we hope to provide insights into the issues you care about that are rooted in our shared faith, and can inform your advocacy efforts. This month Velda Love, our UCC Minister for Racial Justice, explores Dr. King\u2019s warning about the giant triplets Racism, Extreme Materialism, and Militarism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Confronting Racism, Extreme Materialism, and Militarism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin: 5px;\" title=\"velda-love-75.jpg\" src=\"{{ theme['velda-love-75.jpg'] }}\" alt=\"velda-love-75.jpg\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" \/>April 4, 1967 commemorates the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s speech at Riverside Church in New York City. As I read the transcript and listened to \u201cBeyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence,\u201d the words and phrases King spoke in 1967 bear striking similarities to what we continue to face in 2017. Through prayer, worship, advocacy training, and networking with other Christians, we will face the current manifestations of these \u2018triplets\u2019 and together advocate for change in public policy that better reflects the Beloved Community about which Dr. King spoke. <a href=\"http:\/\/advocacydays.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">Join us!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Earth Sunday on April 23rd<\/strong><br \/>The UCC is co-sponsoring materials produced by Creation Justice Ministries for Earth Sunday, which falls on April 23rd. The thematic focus this year is \u201cEnvironmental Justice with Indigenous Peoples.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucc.org\/earth_day_sunday\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Access resources and start planning your Earth Day Sunday observance.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Break the Silence Sunday<\/strong><br \/>Break The Silence Sunday is an effort to open up a conversation within the church about rape and sexual assault. The suggested date is the fourth Sunday of April to coincide with Sexual Assault Awareness Month. If that date doesn\u2019t work for your congregation, feel free to schedule the observance when it best fits with the life and ministry of your community. <a href=\"https:\/\/breakthesilencesunday.org\/2017-materials-resources\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">Download resources including liturgy, sermon suggestions, scripture reflections, and ideas about talking to children and youth about rape &amp; sexual violence.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>April 29<sup>th<\/sup> Climate March in Washington, D.C.<\/strong><br \/>The UCC Council for Climate Justice along with Justice and Witness Ministries are official co-sponsors of the climate march in Washington, DC. This march is being organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesclimate.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">People\u2019s Climate Movement<\/a> which spearheaded the 2014 march in New York City that had 400,000 in attendance. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucc.org\/climate_march_in_washington_d_c\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Let us know<\/a> if you are planning to come, so we can coordinate a strong UCC presence at the march.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Immigrant Rights Sunday<\/strong><br \/>The first Sunday in May has been designated Immigrant Rights Sunday within the United Church of Christ.
