FLORENCE: Slow-moving Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina Sept. 14, then lingered over the region, causing catastrophic flooding, including prolonged significant river flooding.

MICHAEL: Then fast-moving Hurricane Michael struck the Florida Panhandle Sept. 10, keeping its strength as it careened northward, causing tremendous destruction.  It weakened to a tropical storm only after reaching Central Georgia. From there it continued onward to the Carolinas and Virginia. Damage in Florida pictured below.

International Hurricanes/Typhoons

MANGKHUT: The equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane, Typhoon Mangkhut (local name Ompong) battered the Philippines. The storm destroyed shelters and livelihoods, including crops, and left scores of people confirmed dead and many more missing and feared dead in landslides. It then went on to cause damage in Hong Kong, China and other parts of Asia.
