United Church of Christ General Minister and President the Rev. John C. Dorhauer issues a call for a return to common decency in a message to mark the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. 


I have been given the privilege of traveling the breadth of our denomination to preach, teach, and bear witness to the many ways God is still speaking in our midst through the faithful gathering of disciples that comprise our 4,882 churches over all 50 states.


There was a time when all of our daily rhythms were governed by the light of day. With no electricity, when the daylight was out we were up; and when the night fell so did we – asleep.


On August 1, I started in the roles of Associate General Minister for Wider Church Ministries and Operations and Co-Executive for Global Ministries. After the purchase of a home, a drive from New York to Cleveland, and receiving a moving truck, I am adjusting to being back in Ohio and working out of the National Setting.


We have entered my favorite time of year on the liturgical calendar: Advent.


Among the things I value from my days as a Catholic, good liturgical music is at the top of the list.


I have recently returned from a deeply meaningful trip to Dresden, Germany.
