SUMMARY:Elon Musk\, Oligarchy\, and Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:Over and over again\, the Bible tells of prophets who confronted rulers and the rich with an eye toward justice. Today\, the ultra-rich hold enormous political power in the United States\, and the implications are many\, especially when it comes to the pursuit of climate justice. As the world’s richest man and as someone once hailed as a climate savior\, Elon Musk has told the President that “we don’t need to rush” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As people of faith\, what are we to make of this situation in which a small number of wealthy individuals have a tremendous influence over the future well-being of humanity and all of God’s creation? More importantly\, what are we to do? The following panelists will help us address these questions: \n-Edie Rasell\, author of “The Way of Abundance: Economic Justice in Scripture and Society”\n-KeShaun Pearson\, Executive Director of Memphis Community Against Pollution\n-Joseph Geevarghese\, Executive Director of Our Revolution \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council.

SUMMARY:Love of Children Partner Event - Context Matters: The Impact of Social Context on Emotional Growth
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will give youth workers\, parents and educators a chance to examine the context and environment within which our children are developing socially and emotionally. The goal of this seminar is to offer a framework for understanding the WHY so we can identify the WHAT and HOW when we are working to support youth today. Participants will also be invited to think about how their own context can show up in their interactions with youth and ways to be mindful of those impacts.

SUMMARY:Nurture the Soul's Reading Into the New Year: The Recovery of Joy while Living with Depression with Robert Griggs
DESCRIPTION:At the start of every year\, Nurture the Soul partners with Pilgrim Press to highlight books that came out in the last quarter of the previous year or are forthcoming. We have an exciting list of topics and authors to highlight this January including Author and Pastor Robert Griggs. \nAt a time when we’re all looking for hope\, his book\, “Wild Coin Hunting: The Recovery of Joy while Living with Depression”\, offers hope for people living with mental illness and their loved ones. Drawing from his own experience of recovering from depression\, as well as what others have taught me along the way\, it shows that a full and joyful life is possible after the devastation of mental illness. There’s honesty about pain\, but there’s also laughter\, as he shares recovery stories from his adventures as the founder of a great new sport\, “wild coin hunting”

SUMMARY:From a Toxic Media to a Toxic Environment
DESCRIPTION:Media in our society can have a decisive influence on everything from elections to the quality of the very air we breathe. It can shape and inform the demands of a public and the political will of those in office. In short\, a toxic media can lead to a toxic government and\, literally\, a toxic environment. This is evident in the influence that media conglomerates like Fox can have on matters as vital as the climate crisis. In this webinar\, we will hear from three guest panelists who will help us to understand our current media landscape\, how it impacts the climate crisis\, and what we can do about it. \n-Allison Fisher\, Program Director for Climate and Energy\, Media Matters for America \n-Elyse Martin\, Manager of Persuasion Research & Campaigns\, Environmental Defense Fund \n-Cheryl A. Leanza\, Policy Advisor\, UCC Media Justice \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. SUMMARY:Nurture the Soul Special Offering: "What's Next"\, The Flourishing Body with Rev. Dr. Beverly Dale
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with a sex-positive Disciple of Christ Pastor\, Rev. Dr. Beverly Dale whose ministerial call is to help Christians rethink the 2000 year-old Christian teaching about our sexual bodies when many have been harmful to intimate relationships and dampened our joy of being spiritual in all of our physicality. We’ll explore how the recent political election is\, in part\, a result of some of the cultural teachings of what is known as The Empire Church about the body and why it is so important to recognize the ongoing danger this represents to our culture and the planet. \nAnd\, we’ll take a deep dive to explore the difference between religious beliefs and faith\, and whether we need to obey religious rules about sexual intimacy and what it is to be authentic in our spiritual life. (found in her first book\, Advancing Sexual Health for the Christian Client\, Data and Dogma.)

SUMMARY:Reclaiming Our Democracy
DESCRIPTION:After the election\, commentators like Tom Nichols urged people to “stay engaged and make their voices heard at every turn.” But most still wonder how\, and even if\, they can make a difference between elections. What are the options? (1) Protesting? Vital\, but usually not the long game. (2) Signing email form letters\, which only 3% of Congressional staff says is highly effective? Just gestures. (3) Taking a 2-year nap until the next election? Sadly\, the preferred route for many. Few know about (4) transformational advocacy which helps you change an issue while you also become changed in the process. \nIn his book “Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen’s Guide to Transformational Advocacy\,” Sam Daley-Harris writes about people who have successfully brought about social change and personal transformation. Join us for this webinar as Daley-Harris shares his stories and wisdom gained from years of leading and coaching advocacy organizations such as Citizen’s Climate Lobby\, Friends Committee on National Legislation\, Catholic Relief Services\, and RESULTS. \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. SUMMARY:What Is Owed: International Climate Debt
DESCRIPTION:While developed countries disproportionately caused the climate crisis\, developing countries have disproportionately suffered the consequences. As a result\, a debt is owed. Yet\, the opposite is happening as developing countries are the ones saddled with the crushing burden of debt payments. According to a report from the IMF and World Bank\, 47 developing countries will pay $400 billion dollars to service their debts in 2024. With the risk of default\, these countries are not able to devote the money needed to address the climate crisis. As the UN Climate Change Conference takes place in Azerbaijan\, we will focus on the enormous moral and financial issues at stake with climate debt. Athena Peralta from the World Council of Churches and Karimi Kinoti from Edeni Platform discuss these critical matters. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council.

SUMMARY:Vote with Love: An Election Day Prayer Vigil & Convening

SUMMARY:Nurture the Soul: Don’t Be Scared\, Be Prepared! What to Expect in the 2024 Election
DESCRIPTION:With November 5th approaching fast\, it can be difficult keeping the election anxiety at bay. The past few years have demonstrated how the time between the presidential election and the presidential inauguration can be uncertain\, chaotic\, and even scary. But one of the best ways to keep the election scaries away is to have a plan in place\, as a church\, for the many scenarios that could play out on and after election day. \nJoin us for a conversation about how we can best prepare for November 5th and the following days. We will discuss topics such as 1) election security and ballot counting\, 2) how to combat misinformation/disinformation on and after Election Day\, and 3) how churches can discern their role as community leaders in keeping our elections safe and accessible. \nWe’ll hear from experts including Abigail Cipparone (UCC Office of Public Policy & Advocacy)\, Chris Crawford (Protect Democracy)\, Cheryl A. Leanza (UCC Media Justice)\, Rev. Michael Neuroth (UCC Office of Public Policy & Advocacy)\, and Raelyn Roberson (Common Cause).
