SUMMARY:White Christian Nationalism and the Midterm Elections
DESCRIPTION:As congressional hearings into the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol end and in the shadow of the rise of the Neo-Nazi organizations in our nation\, the mid-term election is proving to be as contentious as ever.  Equally\, candidates around the country are trafficking white Christian nationalism.  With each passing election\, fringe political ideas become more and more mainstream.  Simultaneously\, white supremacist ideas at work in Christian practices must be contended with. \nOn November 6th\, 2022\, at 7pmET/4pmPT\, Valley and Mountain Fellowship’s Center for Fatih\, Art and Justice\, in partnership with the UCC’s Join the Movement toward Racial Justice Initiative will host a dialogue between Rev. Dr. Obery Hendricks\, author\, Christians Against Christianity: How Right-Wing Evangelicals Are Destroying Our Nation and Our Faith and Dr. Anthea Butler\, author\, White Evangelical Racism: The Politics of Morality in America. The topic is White Christian Nationalism and the Midterm Elections. The dialogue will be moderated by the Right Rev. Dr. Edward Donalson\, III\, author #BlackLivesMatter: Toward an Intersectional Theology.  The event will be live streamed.

SUMMARY:Centering Africa at COP27
DESCRIPTION:In November\, leaders from the world’s nations will be convening at COP27\, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh\, Egypt. While this summit has been described as “the African COP\,” activists from the continent have asserted that they are already being shut out. In this webinar\, we will center the climate concerns and issues faced by Africa\, the continent that bears the least responsibility for the climate crisis yet is most vulnerable to its destructive impacts. A prominent concern for African nations at COP27 is the matter of who will pay for the increasing losses and damages inflicted by the climate crisis. Over the past 50 years\, climate exacerbated drought has led to a loss of an estimated $70 billion in the Horn of Africa and southern Africa\, while the cost of rising sea levels is projected to reach $50 billion by 2050 for islands and coastal areas. Of far greater significance than what can be expressed in monetary amounts is the enormous loss of life that has occurred. Over the past 50 years\, drought led to the loss of over a half million lives\, while flooding has claimed the lives of 20\,000. Among the featured panelists for this webinar will be Dr. Tinashe Gumbo from the All Africa Conference of Churches and the Rev. Michael Kalito from Theological Education by Extension in Zambia (TEEZ). \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council.

SUMMARY:Becoming a Creation Justice Church
DESCRIPTION:Creation Justice Churches is a program of the United Church of Christ that guides congregations in discerning how they can best embody a commitment to care for God’s creation. As Christians\, this is our first calling in the Bible. It is also a calling that has been integral to the DNA of the UCC as a denomination and the historic role played by the UCC’s Commission for Racial Justice in launching the environmental justice movement. In the face of the climate crisis\, the Creation Justice Church program has provided a path of active hope for a growing number of congregations. As the UCC’s Minister for Environmental Justice\, the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt will introduce the program and host the following church leaders who have helped lead their church into becoming Creation Justice Churches: \n\n\nBarbara Smith-Bacon from First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sarasota\, Florida\nRev. Robert Grabill from the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College\nRev. Nancy Leckerling from First Congregational Church in Guilford\, Connecticut\nClaire Stiles from Lakewood United Church of Christ\, St. Petersburg\, Florida\n\nThis webinar is part of a special series of Thursdays for the Soul webinars focused on twelve Just World Covenant programs in the United Church of Christ. On the third Thursday of each month\, one of these programs will be featured. Learn more at: just world covenants

SUMMARY:The Midterms and Beyond: A Path for Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to climate justice\, how do we make it out of the wilderness and arrive at the promised land? In this webinar\, we will discuss the results of the midterms with an eye to what is possible in 2023 and beyond. A full discussion of the midterms entails more than looking at a final scorecard of congressional contests. It entails assessing the power of young voters and voters who care about the climate crisis. It entails tracking the successes of state ballot initiatives. It entails bringing a lens of justice to multiple\, overlapping struggles in our society. A full and broad conversation of the midterms is needed in order to cast a vision and a plan for how our movement can grow and thrive.

SUMMARY:What Is a Sustainable Economy?
DESCRIPTION:With powerful industries based on extractive and exploitative practices\, our economy has been a train barreling toward increasing environmental disaster. The fate of humanity and our planet can no longer continue on this track\, but crucial questions remain: What is a sustainable economy? What will it look like? What must change? What costs might it entail? And\, how will it be achieved? For people of faith\, these questions are engaged from a place that prioritizes matters of equity\, justice\, and the common good. To help us think through these issues\, this webinar will feature Edith Rasell who recently authored the book\, “The Way of Abundance: Economic Justice in Scripture and Society.” \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it.\nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. SUMMARY:Against Islamophobia & White Supremacy with Linda Sarsour
DESCRIPTION:The January 6th attack on the United States Capitol showed that white Christian Nationalism is on the rise. 2022 ended with over 200 white nationalist candidates elected at every level of government. With each passing election\, fringe political ideas become more and more mainstream.  Simultaneously\, islamophobia has never lost its public appeal.  The so-called Muslim Ban is just one example of white supremacy becoming policy.  Religious leaders are called to fight back against the rising tide of islamophobia in our community and congregations. \nJoin the conversation with Linda Sarsour\, noted Palestinian-American civil rights leader who will speak on the topic: Islamophobia and White Supremacy. Sarsour was co-chair of the 2017 Women’s March\, the 2017 Day Without a Woman\, and the 2019 Women’s March. She is also a former executive director of the Arab American Association of New York. The event will be livestreamed on the United Church of Christ YouTube channel. \nHosted by the Valley and Mountain Fellowship’s Center for Faith\, Art\, and Justice in partnership with the United Church of Christ’s Join the Movement toward Racial Justice and others\, the series Set Us Free from Fear: Faith\, White Supremacy\, and Politics invites scholars\, clergy\, and activists working at the intersection of race and faith to share their wisdom to our broader communities. \nView Livestream Here

SUMMARY:Virtual National Gathering of UCC Rural/Small Town Churches and Ministries
DESCRIPTION:The Virtual National Gathering of UCC Rural/Small Town Churches and Ministries: \nGathering Dates: February 9-11\, 2023 (Thursday\, Friday\, & Saturday*\n*On Saturday\, encourage congregations to gather together in church\, potluck style and\nparticipate in joint communion across the denomination.) \nTime: 4:00 – 7:00 pm EST \nTheme: Nourishing the Seeds of Faith (Isaiah 55:10-11) \nContact: Rev Roberto Ochoa\, UCC Minister for Ethnic Inclusion\, Rural and Small Churches – ochoar@ucc.org \nIn the Fall of 2019\, UCC General Minister/President Rev John Dorhauer received a letter from a UCC pastor in a rural setting disappointed in the lack of congregational and pastoral presence during General Synod.  The pastor felt that rural congregations and ministers felt isolated and disconnected from the national setting. \nJohn responded by referring the letter to Rev Dr Chris Davies\, Team Leader of Faith INFO and requested Rev Roberto Ochoa\, who was responsible for congregational support and resources for Faith INFO contact the pastor. \nThat contact led to the beginning of a movement to reach out to rural identified congregations and all those interested in rural ministries. \nIn December 2020\, Rev Roberto was paired with Rev Dr Bonnie Bates\, Penn Northeast Conference Minister to present a workshop about the state of the UCC rural/small town churches in the denomination for the virtual AM 21 Conference. \nTopics relevant to the rural church settings were explored in several UCC Thursdays for the Soul webinar series hosted by Roberto. \nDuring the virtual General Synod of 2021\, a workshop was presented by Roberto\, Bonnie\, and Rev Dr Marc Stewart\, CM Montana/No Wyoming.  It resulted in the creation of the Coalition for UCC Rural Ministries for all those interested in rural ministries from every setting of the UCC.  The Coalition has met monthly since 2021 and has been hosted by Bonnie Bates and Roberto Ochoa for the purposes of listening and collaborating with best practices for the rural local church and pastoral leadership. \nA special report by CARDD on WHERE OUR UCC CONGREGATIONS CALL HOME: RURAL\, TOWN\, SUBURBAN\, AND URBAN CONGREGATIONS researched and authored by Roberto Ochoa found that over 60% of UCC congregations were in communities with less than 25\,000.  https://www.ucc.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022.vfw_.pdf  (p 55-57) \nTwo primary goals of the Coalition for UCC Rural Ministries has been to have a national gathering of UCC rural churches and pastoral leaders and to organize for recognition by the National Setting of the UCC.
