SUMMARY:Race to the Polls: Preparing the UCC for the 2024 Election
DESCRIPTION:Almost every ballot measure and candidate policy platform have implications for racial justice because racial disparities are woven into every part of our political system and common life. No matter what your political views are\, in the 2024 election we all will be making choices that either maintain the status quo of racism or create greater equity and justice. In the UCC\, we have the resources of our faith and the covenants we share in our General Synod Resolutions to help guide us\, but with all the information swirling around us\, it can be hard to discern what and who will actually help us build a more just world for all. So we hope you’ll join us for this webinar where we will prayerfully engage in care-full conversation to discover the ways our faithful commitments to intersectional justice and collective liberation can guide our voting and campaigning in this vital moment for democracy in the United States. A special offering from the Racial Justice Ministries and Join the Movement.

SUMMARY:Healing as Freedom\, Freedom as Healing: Lineages of Emancipation toward Wholeness Juneteenth 2024
DESCRIPTION:Racial Justice Ministries and Join the Movement toward Racial Justice invite you to honor and celebrate Juneteenth this year by remembering and discovering the healing practices that sustained freedom in the bones of our ancestors\, before and after emancipation. Through music and prayer\, poetry and art\, reflection\, and ritual\, may we find a medicine bundle\, a libation\, a Brush Harbor and a clearing\, a poultice that teaches us the sound of freedom\, echoing from legacies of healing and singing futures of wholeness. \n“On “Freedom’s Eve\,” or the eve of January 1\, 1863\, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night\, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight\, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers\, many of whom were black\, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States.” \nExplore the rich historical legacy of Juneteenth. Deepen practices of restorative healing. Listen and learn from educators\, organizers\, activists\, and next generation leaders. Remember\, God is still Speaking!

SUMMARY:From Surviving to Thriving: Healing for the Forgotten Survivors of Racial Terror
DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing and Supporting Sarah Collins Rudolph\nOn September 15\, 1963\, four members of the Ku Klux Klan planted dynamite inside the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham\, Alabama and at about 10:20am\, it was detonated.   When that dynamite exploded into the history of our nation\, it destroyed the lives of four girls\, Addie Mae Collins\, Denise McNair\, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley who were attending Sunday School services.  Unknown to many is the fact that there was a 5th little girl\, 12-year-old Sarah Collins\, who survived the bombing and whose life has been shaped by that trauma ever since. \nOn September 15\, 2023\, Join the Movement toward Racial Justice is partnering with Nurturing Justice to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the bombing and to support survivor Sarah Collins Rudolph.  Through an online symposium\, we will seek healing from the horror of past harms\, while keeping the power of the story of survival alive in our communities.  Through education\, skill-building and reparatory justice\, this symposium promises to not only honor the past but to equip us to build a future free from racial terror\, one where people of African descent cannot only survive\, but thrive. \nThe ongoing rise of white nationalist terror in our contemporary context\, the prevalence of trauma for Black and Brown people in America\, and the political and systemic roll back of voting\, educational\, reproductive and other basic human rights and freedoms\, require our persistent attention.  Let us join together on this historic day to see what history has to teach us about repairing our present and creating a more just future. \nContribute to the community restorative justice campaign to support Sarah Collins Rudolph by donating here. \nSymposium Format\nMorning Session\n\nOpening Worship\nInterview with Sarah Rudolph Collins\nPlenary Keynote: Racial Terror\, Trauma and Survival – Then and Now\n\nRegister here for the Morning Session:\nhttps://UCC.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Nn4Ltq2PQnWlpdd-u2pm0w  \nAfternoon Session\n\nWorkshops\n\nCombatting Christian Nationalism\nHealing Intergenerational Trauma\nCommunity Organizing against Racial Terror\n\n\n\nRegister here for the Afternoon Session:\nhttps://UCC.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0vdu6oqD4vHNYx9RninS_ncA2q0XBHci-A \nSymposium Speakers and Leaders\n\nRev. SUMMARY:Against Islamophobia & White Supremacy with Linda Sarsour
DESCRIPTION:The January 6th attack on the United States Capitol showed that white Christian Nationalism is on the rise. 2022 ended with over 200 white nationalist candidates elected at every level of government. With each passing election\, fringe political ideas become more and more mainstream.  Simultaneously\, islamophobia has never lost its public appeal.  The so-called Muslim Ban is just one example of white supremacy becoming policy.  Religious leaders are called to fight back against the rising tide of islamophobia in our community and congregations. \nJoin the conversation with Linda Sarsour\, noted Palestinian-American civil rights leader who will speak on the topic: Islamophobia and White Supremacy. Sarsour was co-chair of the 2017 Women’s March\, the 2017 Day Without a Woman\, and the 2019 Women’s March. She is also a former executive director of the Arab American Association of New York. The event will be livestreamed on the United Church of Christ YouTube channel. \nHosted by the Valley and Mountain Fellowship’s Center for Faith\, Art\, and Justice in partnership with the United Church of Christ’s Join the Movement toward Racial Justice and others\, the series Set Us Free from Fear: Faith\, White Supremacy\, and Politics invites scholars\, clergy\, and activists working at the intersection of race and faith to share their wisdom to our broader communities. \nView Livestream Here
