SUMMARY:From Greenwashing to Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Charter declares that one of its central mandates is “to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples.” Despite this\, the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) transparently reveals a process that has become dominated by fossil fuel interests rather than the interests of all peoples. The President of COP28 is Sultan Al Jaber\, the CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company which is one of the world’s largest oil producers and is currently working to aggressively expand its production. In this webinar\, panelists will not only provide a critical assessment of the greenwashing and corporate capture of the upcoming COP\, but they will also cast an alternative vision and pathway forward. Ultimately\, the world deserves and desperately needs a UN process dedicated to the advancement of all peoples. Justice must be central not only to COP pronouncements but also to its actions. \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-sponsored by Alabama Interfaith Power & Light\, the People’s Justice Council\, United Church Funds\, and the United Church of Christ.

SUMMARY:Seeing through the Smoke: Wildfires\, Climate\, and a Path Forward
DESCRIPTION:How can we find a path forward in addressing the wildfires that have created a landscape of crisis in our climate changed world? Rick O’Rourke is from the Cultural Fire Management Council which practices fire stewardship on the Yurok Reservation and ancestral lands. \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council.

SUMMARY:Getting Ready for Earth Sunday: Resources for Congregations
DESCRIPTION:Many churches celebrate God’s creation on the Sunday closest to Earth Day (April 22nd). It is an opportunity to not only address some of the most pressing issues faced by our world today\, but to also give people a vision of hope and a path forward. To assist with this vitally important undertaking\, Creation Justice Ministries has created an ecumenical resource for churches. The resource for this year brings the lens of justice to food\, the most immediate and tangible way that we connect with the natural world around us. In this webinar\, Karyn Bigelow\, Co-Executive Director of Creation Justice Ministries\, will introduce the resource and talk about specific ways churches can deliver a powerful message and experience on Earth Sunday. SUMMARY:What Is a Sustainable Economy?
DESCRIPTION:With powerful industries based on extractive and exploitative practices\, our economy has been a train barreling toward increasing environmental disaster. The fate of humanity and our planet can no longer continue on this track\, but crucial questions remain: What is a sustainable economy? What will it look like? What must change? What costs might it entail? And\, how will it be achieved? For people of faith\, these questions are engaged from a place that prioritizes matters of equity\, justice\, and the common good. To help us think through these issues\, this webinar will feature Edith Rasell who recently authored the book\, “The Way of Abundance: Economic Justice in Scripture and Society.” \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it.\nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. SUMMARY:The Midterms and Beyond: A Path for Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to climate justice\, how do we make it out of the wilderness and arrive at the promised land? In this webinar\, we will discuss the results of the midterms with an eye to what is possible in 2023 and beyond. A full discussion of the midterms entails more than looking at a final scorecard of congressional contests. It entails assessing the power of young voters and voters who care about the climate crisis. It entails tracking the successes of state ballot initiatives. It entails bringing a lens of justice to multiple\, overlapping struggles in our society. A full and broad conversation of the midterms is needed in order to cast a vision and a plan for how our movement can grow and thrive.

SUMMARY:Centering Africa at COP27
DESCRIPTION:In November\, leaders from the world’s nations will be convening at COP27\, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh\, Egypt. While this summit has been described as “the African COP\,” activists from the continent have asserted that they are already being shut out. In this webinar\, we will center the climate concerns and issues faced by Africa\, the continent that bears the least responsibility for the climate crisis yet is most vulnerable to its destructive impacts. A prominent concern for African nations at COP27 is the matter of who will pay for the increasing losses and damages inflicted by the climate crisis. Over the past 50 years\, climate exacerbated drought has led to a loss of an estimated $70 billion in the Horn of Africa and southern Africa\, while the cost of rising sea levels is projected to reach $50 billion by 2050 for islands and coastal areas. Of far greater significance than what can be expressed in monetary amounts is the enormous loss of life that has occurred. Over the past 50 years\, drought led to the loss of over a half million lives\, while flooding has claimed the lives of 20\,000. Among the featured panelists for this webinar will be Dr. Tinashe Gumbo from the All Africa Conference of Churches and the Rev. Michael Kalito from Theological Education by Extension in Zambia (TEEZ). SUMMARY:The Inflation Reduction Act: How It Can Benefit Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) changes the landscape of what’s possible for faith communities when it comes to solar and energy efficiency. For example\, did you know that this new law now makes it possible for nonprofit organizations to receive a direct payment from the federal government that equals 30% of a solar installation’s cost? \nYet there is much about the law and how it can benefit faith communities that requires careful attention and navigation. Moreover\, there can be an alphabet soup of technical and financial jargon that one must confront when it comes to understanding PPAs\, SRECs\, ITCs\, and more. \nHow is a faith community to discern what is the best way to finance solar or energy efficiency upgrades? \nFor this webinar\, we will sort through what faith communities need to know\, while also looking at successful examples and practices. Panelists for this webinar will be assembled in collaboration with the UCC Cornerstone Fund\, a long-time advocate for climate-care church energy projects. \nIf you can’t join us live\, still sign up and we will send you the recording and resources! \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt\, who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ\, and the Rev. Michael Malcom\, who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:The Birth of a Movement: A 40th Anniversary Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Just as the Montgomery Bus Boycott was a watershed event in kickstarting the Civil Rights Movement\, a six-week civil disobedience campaign in Warren County\, North Carolina\, served as the watershed event for the Environmental Justice Movement in 1982. As more than 500 people were arrested to prevent the dumping of toxic waste in a predominantly black community\, a nation soon became awakened to the crisis of environmental racism. This September will mark the 40th anniversary of the Warren County protests that would ripple outward around the world with far reaching impacts that continue until today. A wealth of insight and inspiration is to be found in this critical moment of history during which leaders grounded in their faith played an integral and significant role. In this webinar\, we will hear from three persons who were an important part of the protests: Dollie Burwell\, the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Chavis\, Jr.\, and the Rev. William Kearney.

SUMMARY:Overdue: Environmental Justice for All
DESCRIPTION:The United States has a long history of environmental injustice that has led to undue burdens of pollution on people of color and low-income communities. In this webinar\, we will focus specifically on environmental injustice in relation to access to clean water. Our special guest will be Lynn Thorp who serves as the National Campaigns Director for Clean Water Action. She will discuss how we can make strides in reducing water pollution\, including exposure to toxic substances such as persistent and pervasive PFAS chemicals also known as “forever” chemicals. She will additionally discuss how to ensure that large new water infrastructure investments are spent equitably and effectively as well as how to modernize our drinking water systems. Finally\, she will draw the connections between securing clean water while also addressing the climate crisis and promoting clean energy. Join us as we learn about what reforms are needed (and possible!) from our federal government. \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Andy Wells-Bean who serves as the National Environmental Justice Fellow for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council.

SUMMARY:Wartime Threat: Increased Fossil Fuel Production at Home
DESCRIPTION:The fossil fuel industry is using the war in Ukraine to push for ramping up production in the United States. As a result\, communities on the frontlines of the industry face the wartime threat of more pollution and more harm to their health. In this webinar\, we will learn about the history that shapes the threats faced\, and we will hear directly from those fighting at the grassroots to protect their families and communities. Featured speakers will include Roishetta Ozane from Healthy Gulf\, Lois Bower-Bjornson from the Clean Air Council\, and David J.X. SUMMARY:Discerning and Deciding: Bold Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, the world has less than three years for its greenhouse gas emissions to peak and head into a relatively rapid decline. Careful discernment is needed on where people of faith and conscience should place their time and energy in organizing for the policies that will lead us to a more just and hospitable world. Should the focus be on climate legislation currently being considered in Congress? Should the focus be upon presidential emergency powers? To help answer these questions\, this webinar will feature three leaders in the climate movement: \n\nKeya Chatterjee\, Executive Director of U.S. Climate Action Network\nMiranda Ehrlich\, Federal Field Director for the Sierra Club\nJean Su\, Energy Justice Director for the Center for Biological Diversity\n\nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. SUMMARY:Climate Migration: Responding with Faith\, Care\, and Equity
DESCRIPTION:Migration stemming from the damage done to our climate is underway right now as the lives of people around the world are being uprooted and disrupted. From sub-Saharan Africa and the Pacific Islands to Alaska and Louisiana\, we are seeing the present consequences of drought\, extreme weather\, and rising sea levels. According to a recent UN climate report\, 20 million people have been displaced each year since 2008 due to extreme weather that is often exacerbated by the climate crisis. While climate-related migration is bound to increase\, there is much we can do as people of faith to both mitigate the severity of the climate crisis and reduce worsening inequities amid forced displacement. This webinar will feature those working to address climate migration from a place of deeply held values: \n\nDrocella Mugorewera\, Executive Director for Bridge Refugee Services\nTomas Matom Ramirez\, Guatemalan Immigrant of the Indigenous Maya Ixil People\nRev. Irene Hassan\, Minister of Refugee and Migration Services for the United Church of Christ\n\nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. SUMMARY:The Faith of Prophets: Lessons for the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The best-selling Catholic writer Joan Chittister has written\, “What this world needs most right now is a new generation of prophets.” This is especially true as we confront the climate crisis today. Yet\, we can no longer wait for others to be the prophets that were needed yesterday. We have to find the prophet in each of us. We are the ones who can make a profound difference right now. To answer the urgent call for prophetic action today\, this event will focus on what the Hebrew Prophets can teach us as well as what current prophetic leaders have to say. The event will consist of three parts: \n\nOpening Keynote via Zoom: “Why Prophets Matter Today” by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt\, Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ (10:30 am to 11:30 am ET).\nPanel Discussion via Zoom: “Prophetic Action Today” with the Rev. Michael Malcom from the People’s Justice Council\, Nellis Kennedy-Howard from Honor the Earth\, and Hector Arbuckle from the Ames Climate Action Team (11:45 am to 12:45 pm ET).\nLocal Action in Your Own Community: Create and deliver a community climate collage to the district office of your Congressional Representative or Senator. (Learn more at: https://bit.ly/PropheticAction)\n\nThis event arose of the 37th Ames UCC Annual Theologian in Residence program. The National Setting of the United Church of Christ\, the Iowa Conference of the United Church of Christ\, and the Central Association of the Iowa Conference have all partnered with Ames UCC to make this event a national and regional offering during the celebration of Earth Month. Additional organizations supporting this event will soon be named. \nRegistration for this event covers both the opening keynote and the panel discussion. Registrants will receive links to recordings of the event afterwards.

SUMMARY:Getting Ready for Earth Sunday: Resources for Congregations
DESCRIPTION:With the recently released report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, the dire situation faced by our world has never been clearer. In such a moment\, leadership from communities of faith is sorely needed. Thankfully\, Creation Justice Ministries has created an ecumenical resource that will assist churches in answering the call placed upon us in this moment. The resource is entitled “Weathering the Storm: Faithful Climate Resilience.” It specifically helps churches respond to the question\, “How can our churches be hubs of resilience\, helping our neighbors weather the physical and spiritual storms of the climate crisis?” The resource can be used year-round and is also particularly useful in preparing for Earth Sunday (April 24th). In this webinar\, Avery Davis Lamb\, Co-Executive Director of Creation Justice Ministries\, will introduce the resource and talk about specific ways churches can deliver a powerful message and experience on Earth Sunday.

SUMMARY:Restoring Nature: What People of Faith Can Do to Heal the Earth
DESCRIPTION:Restoring Nature: What People of Faith Can Do to Heal the Earth\nDouglas Tallamy’s books have awakened thousands to the problem of wildlife decline and the solution that resides in habitat restoration. This is a solution of which you and your faith community can be a part. The solution can be as close as your backyard or the property surrounding your place of worship. In this webinar\, Tallamy will outline the crisis faced and what we can do in response. The green teams and green thumbs of faith communities will learn not only about cultivating native plants in the landscapes around them\, but also what can be done to create a transformative movement full of actions ordinary people everywhere can take. To care for God’s creation\, we can start by simply stepping outside the doors of where we gather for worship to make the most of our sacred places. In this webinar\, Tallamy will raise our awareness and equip us to make a difference in our world. \nThis webinar is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Carol Devine who serves as the Minister of Green Chalice for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

SUMMARY:The U.S. Military and Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:The United States military is one of the world’s biggest polluters. As an institution\, it leads the world in oil consumption and emits enormous amounts of greenhouse gases. To grasp the environmental impact of the U.S. military\, however\, requires us to go beyond statistics and numbers. One must listen to those from the communities directly affected. This webinar will provide an overview of environmental justice concerns pertaining to the U.S. military while also centering the voices of those engaged in the struggle to stop the pollution of the Navy’s Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility on the island of Oahu. Faith communities will not only learn about the issues\, but also how they can take action for justice. Featured panelists will include: \n\nWayne Tanaka\, Executive Director of the Sierra Club in Hawaiʻi\nDanny Tengan\, Disaster Coordinator for Hawaiʻi Conference of the United Church of Christ\nLorah Steichen\, Outreach Coordinator for the National Priorities Project\n\nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. SUMMARY:Climate Savior or Neocolonialist?: Assessing Biden from an Indigenous Christian Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The environmental movement has widely lauded the actions taken by the Biden-Harris administration in addressing the climate crisis through early appointments and executive orders. Yet\, there is a larger context to consider as indigenous leaders continue fights against pipelines domestically and Syria is bombed internationally. In this webinar\, Mark Charles\, a dual citizen of the US and the Navajo Nation\, will provide an indigenous Christian perspective on Joe Biden’s presidency. Mark is a co-author of the book\, “Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing\, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery.” In 2020\, Mark ran as an independent candidate for the US presidency. \nSpecial thanks to the sponsorship of the Cornerstone Fund in making this webinar possible.
