SUMMARY:An Indigenous Translation of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:The “First Nations Version” is an Indigenous translation of the Christian scriptures. It brings a fresh language to how these scriptures are conveyed and understood. Notably\, a decolonized rendering of the sacred texts articulates a different understanding of how humans understand their relationship to both God and all of God’s creation. In this webinar\, we will hear from three members of the translation council that produced the First Nations Version. Terry M. Wildman\, who envisioned the translation\, will be joined by Amy Allan and Kimberlee Medicine Horn Jackson. Register to learn about this translation\, especially as it relates to caring for God’s creation. \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council.

SUMMARY:Politics\, Polarization\, and Prophetic Ministry
DESCRIPTION:As the attention of the world focuses on the 2024 elections\, what will be the role of churches that embody the prophetic tradition of the Christian faith? What will preachers say from the pulpit? How will justice-centered ministries be called to act? These can be difficult questions to answer in the context of church cultures in which there is a fear of political conflict and polarization. In this webinar\, we will address these critical issues and questions with the help of our featured panelists: \n-Dr. Obery Hendricks\, Author of “The Politics of Jesus” and “Christians against Christianity” \n-Rev. Dr. Leah Schade\, Author of “Preaching in the Purple Zone: Ministry in the Red-Blue Divide” \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it.

SUMMARY:Earth Sunday Resource: Addressing the Plastics Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Everywhere we look in our culture you will find plastic. It surrounds our food\, it makes up our technology\, and it is a standard element in our household items. Unfortunately\, it is also overflowing from our landfills\, floating in our waters\, and polluting our soil. More and more\, you can even find it in our own bodies and those of other living creatures. Creation Justice Ministries has created an Earth Sunday resource designed to help congregations think more deeply about the ways that plastics impact our lives and God’s creation. It is also intended to equip people of faith to take actions to address this epidemic in faithful and practical ways. The title of this new resource is “Plastic Jesus: Real Faith in a Synthetic World.” Join us as we hear from the lead author of the resource Derrick Weston.

SUMMARY:How Long Till Justice?: Flint\, Jackson\, and Red Hill
DESCRIPTION:In April\, the 10th anniversary of the water crisis in Flint\, Michigan will be marked. Yet\, justice\, in many forms and by many measures\, has remained elusive. For instance\, not a penny of the $626 million settlement has been distributed to residents. Just as the struggle for justice in Flint continues\, so it also continues in other communities that have experienced water crises. In recent headlines\, we learn of how large corporations exploited and deceived towns like Jackson\, Mississippi with false promises of fixing their water infrastructure. Meanwhile\, the EPA continues to find water contamination in homes near the US Navy’s Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility on Oʻahu as health problems persist and residents battle with landlords over rent collection. This webinar will focus on what justice would look like in Flint\, Jackson\, and the communities near Red Hill. We will also focus on what it will take to achieve that justice. Our webinar will feature residents and leaders from each of the three communities. SUMMARY:Primary Season: Prioritizing Climate Solutions
DESCRIPTION:In reference to the prospects of progressive candidates in 2024\, recent headlines have highlighted a “waning enthusiasm” among Black\, Hispanic\, and young voters. SUMMARY:From Greenwashing to Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Charter declares that one of its central mandates is “to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples.” Despite this\, the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) transparently reveals a process that has become dominated by fossil fuel interests rather than the interests of all peoples. The President of COP28 is Sultan Al Jaber\, the CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company which is one of the world’s largest oil producers and is currently working to aggressively expand its production. In this webinar\, panelists will not only provide a critical assessment of the greenwashing and corporate capture of the upcoming COP\, but they will also cast an alternative vision and pathway forward. Ultimately\, the world deserves and desperately needs a UN process dedicated to the advancement of all peoples. Justice must be central not only to COP pronouncements but also to its actions. \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-sponsored by Alabama Interfaith Power & Light\, the People’s Justice Council\, United Church Funds\, and the United Church of Christ.

SUMMARY:Climate Hope Cards Prayer Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a brief online prayer service as we enter into the final week of collecting Climate Hope Cards to deliver to Washington\, DC in September. Climate Hope Cards is an effort to strengthen EPA protections so that we might save thousands of lives\, address societal inequities\, and put our nation on track to reach its climate goals. UCC churches and camps across the country have been participating in this campaign over the course of the summer. The prayer service will feature interns and fellows who have been devoting time and energy to collecting cards. They will share with us moments in which they have experienced or witnessed hope over the past few months. All are welcome to join us!

SUMMARY:Seeing through the Smoke: Wildfires\, Climate\, and a Path Forward
DESCRIPTION:How can we find a path forward in addressing the wildfires that have created a landscape of crisis in our climate changed world? This webinar will feature three leading thinkers and practitioners in answering this question. John Vaillant has recently released a book entitled “Fire Weather: A True Story from a Hotter World” that David Wallace Wells has praised as “mesmerizing” and “unfortunately\, exquisitely timed.” Shana Udvardy is the Senior Climate Resilience Policy Analyst for the Union of Concerned Scientists. Rick O’Rourke is from the Cultural Fire Management Council which practices fire stewardship on the Yurok Reservation and ancestral lands. SUMMARY:What Is a Sustainable Economy?
DESCRIPTION:With powerful industries based on extractive and exploitative practices\, our economy has been a train barreling toward increasing environmental disaster. The fate of humanity and our planet can no longer continue on this track\, but crucial questions remain: What is a sustainable economy? What will it look like? What must change? What costs might it entail? And\, how will it be achieved? For people of faith\, these questions are engaged from a place that prioritizes matters of equity\, justice\, and the common good. To help us think through these issues\, this webinar will feature Edith Rasell who recently authored the book\, “The Way of Abundance: Economic Justice in Scripture and Society.” \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it.\nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. SUMMARY:The Midterms and Beyond: A Path for Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to climate justice\, how do we make it out of the wilderness and arrive at the promised land? In this webinar\, we will discuss the results of the midterms with an eye to what is possible in 2023 and beyond. A full discussion of the midterms entails more than looking at a final scorecard of congressional contests. It entails assessing the power of young voters and voters who care about the climate crisis. It entails tracking the successes of state ballot initiatives. It entails bringing a lens of justice to multiple\, overlapping struggles in our society. A full and broad conversation of the midterms is needed in order to cast a vision and a plan for how our movement can grow and thrive.

SUMMARY:Centering Africa at COP27
DESCRIPTION:In November\, leaders from the world’s nations will be convening at COP27\, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh\, Egypt. While this summit has been described as “the African COP\,” activists from the continent have asserted that they are already being shut out. In this webinar\, we will center the climate concerns and issues faced by Africa\, the continent that bears the least responsibility for the climate crisis yet is most vulnerable to its destructive impacts. A prominent concern for African nations at COP27 is the matter of who will pay for the increasing losses and damages inflicted by the climate crisis. Over the past 50 years\, climate exacerbated drought has led to a loss of an estimated $70 billion in the Horn of Africa and southern Africa\, while the cost of rising sea levels is projected to reach $50 billion by 2050 for islands and coastal areas. Of far greater significance than what can be expressed in monetary amounts is the enormous loss of life that has occurred. Over the past 50 years\, drought led to the loss of over a half million lives\, while flooding has claimed the lives of 20\,000. Among the featured panelists for this webinar will be Dr. Tinashe Gumbo from the All Africa Conference of Churches and the Rev. Michael Kalito from Theological Education by Extension in Zambia (TEEZ). \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. SUMMARY:The Inflation Reduction Act: How It Can Benefit Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) changes the landscape of what’s possible for faith communities when it comes to solar and energy efficiency. For example\, did you know that this new law now makes it possible for nonprofit organizations to receive a direct payment from the federal government that equals 30% of a solar installation’s cost? \nYet there is much about the law and how it can benefit faith communities that requires careful attention and navigation. Moreover\, there can be an alphabet soup of technical and financial jargon that one must confront when it comes to understanding PPAs\, SRECs\, ITCs\, and more. \nHow is a faith community to discern what is the best way to finance solar or energy efficiency upgrades? \nFor this webinar\, we will sort through what faith communities need to know\, while also looking at successful examples and practices. Panelists for this webinar will be assembled in collaboration with the UCC Cornerstone Fund\, a long-time advocate for climate-care church energy projects. \nIf you can’t join us live\, still sign up and we will send you the recording and resources! \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. SUMMARY:The Birth of a Movement: A 40th Anniversary Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Just as the Montgomery Bus Boycott was a watershed event in kickstarting the Civil Rights Movement\, a six-week civil disobedience campaign in Warren County\, North Carolina\, served as the watershed event for the Environmental Justice Movement in 1982. As more than 500 people were arrested to prevent the dumping of toxic waste in a predominantly black community\, a nation soon became awakened to the crisis of environmental racism. This September will mark the 40th anniversary of the Warren County protests that would ripple outward around the world with far reaching impacts that continue until today. A wealth of insight and inspiration is to be found in this critical moment of history during which leaders grounded in their faith played an integral and significant role. In this webinar\, we will hear from three persons who were an important part of the protests: Dollie Burwell\, the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Chavis\, Jr.\, and the Rev. William Kearney. \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. SUMMARY:Overdue: Environmental Justice for All
DESCRIPTION:The United States has a long history of environmental injustice that has led to undue burdens of pollution on people of color and low-income communities. In this webinar\, we will focus specifically on environmental injustice in relation to access to clean water. Our special guest will be Lynn Thorp who serves as the National Campaigns Director for Clean Water Action. She will discuss how we can make strides in reducing water pollution\, including exposure to toxic substances such as persistent and pervasive PFAS chemicals also known as “forever” chemicals. She will additionally discuss how to ensure that large new water infrastructure investments are spent equitably and effectively as well as how to modernize our drinking water systems. Finally\, she will draw the connections between securing clean water while also addressing the climate crisis and promoting clean energy. Join us as we learn about what reforms are needed (and possible!) from our federal government. \nEven if you cannot make the webinar at its scheduled time\, still sign-up\, and we will send you a link to a recording of it. \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Andy Wells-Bean who serves as the National Environmental Justice Fellow for the United Church of Christ and the Rev.
