Coming Down the Mountain

God, today a few thousand UCC leaders come down the mountain from General Synod 32. May the blessing they've received, renew us all.

Our Dread Enemies

Although the psalmist assures us God will shoot an arrow at our enemies, I am grown up enough to forgive a childhood transgression. Until I realize that I have been unfriended.

The Voice

Consider the possibility that the peace you're seeking may come as simply as stopping for a moment and deciding not to argue. May come as simply as listening to that still, speaking Voice.

Fear Cannot Take the Lead

It is not bad to fear; it is a natural response to danger. Problems arise when fear takes over. Fear cannot take the lead, especially as we do the work of God.

Riparian Faith Communities

Before God calls us out to minister to the world's needs, God first asks us to be honest about what we need. God knows, our souls can run dry.

Be Like Daryl

Hate and haters are so easy to hate. We cannot fall for that. We are called to have the courage to choose love, alongside our rejection of hatred.

The Wickedest Man in the World

If you scream at somebody often enough in the name of religion, they just might decide it sounds better to be whatever it is you've been calling them than whatever it is you call yourself.

Crying with Permission

I remember that even the all-powerful Christ was moved to tears by loss. I remember these tears, and I weep. Jesus knew we'd need permission to cry sometimes.

Song and Celebration

The deeper realities of life often escape common prose. Poetry is the attempt to express that which is not easily expressible. Poetry speaks the things that defy being spoken.

Robin Hood

Serving people who can't reciprocate your benevolence is a good thing. Learning not to feel slightly defrauded that they don't is better.
