Easter -- Risen Indeed

They Recognized Christ and He Vanished from Their Sight
Third Sunday of Easter

Call to Worship

One: Great Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Your Holy Presence is ever around us and in us.

All: On our roads of life we pause to give our attention to you and to worship you.

One: May we worship you and recognize you, hear your voice and see you; be touched and loved by you.

All: Stay with us, Holy One.
Break bread with us and nourish us with your Spirit.
Amen. Alleluia!

Call to Confession

One: Remember? Do you remember?
Oh, how our hearts burned within us.
He taught us. He showed us sacred and holy things.
He blessed us and filled the empty places in our lives.

Left side: Yes, we remember the presence of the living Lord. We saw him.

Right side: Yes. We remembered him for awhile, and then he disappeared from our view.

One: Jesus is here. If only we could see him again. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

All: Abiding God, present to us in the Risen Christ, we confess that we don't always recognize you on our path. Eager and preoccupied with other things, we pass through your sustaining presence into a world of our own making. Filled with longing and emptiness, we do not see, hear, feel or know you as you disappear from our view. Forgive us. Restore us. Fill us again with burning hearts made free to be connected, loving, and peacemaking. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

One: Sisters and Brothers, the ever-present sustaining God is made visible in the Risen Christ and we are made new. Our doubts are erased and our longings filled. Our sins are forgiven.

All: Thanks be to God. Amen. Alleluia!

Holy Communion

The Risen Christ joined some of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, but they did not recognize him. We too journey with Jesus, not clearly under standing his presence in our ordinary lives. Today, we are invited to his table to seek Christ's presence and be filled with Christ's Spirit. Come. Eat. Drink. Recognize the Risen Christ.

Communion Prayer

One: When Jesus was at the table with them, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Let us pray: O God our Creator, send forth your Holy Spirit upon these gifts of bread and wine, so that we receive them and recognize the Risen Christ in our midst. May we be united with Christ and with one another as we participate in this joyful feast. May our journey together find us faithful in all things. Amen.

Breaking Bread and Pouring Wine

One: Through the broken bread we recognize the Risen Christ.
Through the cup of blessing we participate in the new life Christ gives.
Come, for all things are ready.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

One: Let us pray:

All: Our hearts burn within us when we hear your Word and sit at your table.
Thank you for coming to us and sharing our common lot. Nourish our faith.
Open our yes, ears, hearts, and minds that we may continually recognize you. Amen. Alleluia!

In times seen and unseen, may God's gracious Spirit stay with you now and forevermore.

The blessings of God our Creator, the presence of the Risen Christ and the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. Alleluia!
