Beneficent Congregational UCC in Providence, RI has a long history of theological openness, cultural and economic diversity, and focus on spiritual justice. The church's rich history unfortunately was not enough to keep up the membership and a few years ago the church was unsure what to do to try and keep its doors open. Two interim ministers decided to establish a plan for redevelopment and growth. The church began by shaping its mission identity as a multi-racial, multi-cultural, open and affirming, diverse faith community committed to social justice. The church now hosts many community events and celebrates the unique cultural diversity of its members. It also donates tens of thousands of dollars for educational scholarships and community outreach.
