It is amazing that something as beautiful and delicate as an orchid can bloom after an event as devastating as a flood. Last year at this time, Church World Service staff traveled to Dontoom District in Thailand to visit Banglon Orchid Farm – a facility where five families cultivate row upon row of orchids. The Church of Christ in Thailand, with support from CWS, has been helping people of the Plang ethnic group to recover after the floods in 2011.  “During the flood we lived in shelters provided by CCT,” said 19-year old Pinpar whose family is part of the orchid growing business. The orchid farm was closed for four months after the flood and there were about 200 people who lived in the shelters. Now that the orchid farm is operating, Pinpar and her family can begin making a living again. Financial hardships in the district still make it necessary for some children to work on the farm after school. A limited number of scholarships are being planned by CCT to help gifted students continue their studies.
