Grants made from OGHS dollars in the first half of 2012, and designated disaster and refugee response accounts totaled more than $1.3 million. The grants were in response to crises in the United States, Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and Europe, and Southern Asia. Whether $530,000 to earthquake relief in Haiti, $70,000 in drought and famine relief in Ethiopia, $100,000 in long term recovery from Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi – all of these grants allow the United Church of Christ and its members to bring hope and assurance to those whose lives have been devastated by disaster. Food, clean water, and temporary shelter are all crucial to our physical well-being. But just as crucial in the recovery process is the knowledge that people next door and across the oceans are willing to give their time, talent and treasure to help.
