Some statistics report that 1 in 6 people around the world do not have access to safe drinking water. Scarcity of water in the Machaze District in Mozambique is tangible proof of these statistics. The United Church of Christ in Mozambique (UCCM) and Global Ministries are working to bring this precious resource to the area through the Water Well project. The first well and cistern were built in 2010 and have helped local families, especially women and children who are responsible for retrieving water.  In some cases, the time and distance they must travel have been cut in half, a savings that is also significant in preserving their safety. Local government support has also been important in the maintenance of the wells and for the future construction of more.
