Thomas Fuller said, “We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.” For the people of Mozambique, the well didn’t exist until about three years ago and so they have always known the worth of water. The United Church of Christ in Mozambique (UCCM) and Global Ministries partnered to create the Water Well project, a program that has helped provide safe drinking water for the Machaze District of Mozambique. The lack of clean drinking water is a serious problem, in particular for women and girls who travel great distances on foot, risking their safety and often times sacrificing their education opportunities to provide water for their families. Plans to construct a second well has begun – a project that will reduce the travel time and distance for more families who live far from the current well location. The local government supports training of community members to keep the wells maintained and functional.
