Recognizing the leadership and organizational insight of W. Mark Clark, the United Church of Christ's national offices have appointed Clark to continue his work in a new role as the UCC's chief administrative officer. A life-long member of the UCC, Clark steps into the new position in early July at the conclusion of General Synod 2013 in Long Beach, Calif.
"Mark has served the United Church of Christ with a profound sense of dedication to his position and the greater church," said UCC General Minister and President the Rev. Geoffrey A. Black. "He has been a tremendous colleague as a member of the Collegium of Officers, and we certainly celebrate that he will stay with us in this new role. I think I speak for all of us when I say we're very blessed that we will continue our work together."
During Clark's two-year term as associate general minister, he has been responsible for the planning of General Synod, worked on the UCC's transition to a single board of governance and has overseen the day-to-day operations of the Office of General Ministries. Clark has been one of five national officers of the church since his election at General Synod 2011. The gifts he brings to his ministry will be celebrated the morning of July 1 at General Synod 2013.
He brings a great set of creative and administrative skills to his new role as CAO, said the Rev. J. Bennett Guess, executive minister of the UCC's Local Church Ministries and fellow officer of the church.
"With many years of experience leading large multimillion-dollar human service enterprises, Mark knows well how to manage complex organizations and systems," said Guess, who was elected alongside Clark in 2011. "But more than that, Mark has spent a lifetime of involvement and leadership in the United Church of Christ, serving as a deeply committed volunteer at every setting of our church. His love for the UCC and his calling and commissioning to this ministry will benefit the whole church."
Clark has been active at all settings of the church. He has been a member of five UCC congregations in two conferences and served on four of those church councils. He is a past moderator of the Southwest Conference and chaired its most recent Conference Minister Search Committee.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Office of General Ministries as chair of its Budget and Finance Committee and as a representative to the Executive Council (2005 through 2009), and chaired the Executive Council's Committee of Reference for General Synod in 2009.
Clark holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Arizona University and an M.S.W. degree from Arizona State University. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, university teaching appointments and scholastic and civic honors. Clark is married to Stacy K. Parrish-Clark.
